Confession. I'm not 100% productive. I don't really know anyone who is. But that shouldn't be the goal in your life. I think a far better goal is can you do something of significance? Can you create something?
It doesn't have to be a world famous novel or a startup that becomes as big as Facebook. But can you create something lasting importance? That could be another mark of your productivity on earth? So for example, there's some people who die at their desk and they put in 14 hours a day till they were 90. Do you want to be like that? I don't.
JD Salinger wrote Catcher in the Rye, one of the most famous popular books in the English language for the last 6070 years. And yet he didn't really do much of anything the last 50 years and his life he wrote a few more books but nothing in the last 50 years of his life. Was that a productive life? Well, he created something of beauty that gave great joy to millions of people all over the globe every year, his entire adult life and now that he's gone as well, so you've got to the side. Don't focus so much on being productive every second of the day as creating something that has lasting productivity. Now, I try to do that with my books.
