Productive people pay their bills on time. Am I saying you're a bad person if you're a poor person can't pay your bills. Now, I'm saying if you want to increase the odds of being productive on a day to day basis, you need to pay your bills on time. Now, if you're a multimillionaire that may be easy. But if you make $10,000 a year, it could be harder. The key is, if you make $10,000 a year, only spend $9,000 a year and pay your bills when they are due.
Now, I don't want to sound holier than that I've had times in my life when I wasn't able to pay my bills. But you know what, it really did impede my productivity. If you're constantly worried about paying last month's rent, if you're afraid to answer the phone, because it could be a bill collector, it's going to impede drastically, your productivity. So do what it takes. Spend within your means, so that you can pay your bills. Now, some people have money, and they just procrastinate.
They don't like to pay bills, find someone else to do it or automate it, do it electronically do whatever it takes to get your bills paid on time, because it will save you money because you're not going to pay late fees. It will save you a lot of time because you're not going to have to answer the letter sent to you saying where's our money? You're not gonna have to answer the phone of people screaming at you saying Where's my money, you're not gonna have to work twice as hard to make twice as much money because your credit score is so much lower that you have to pay higher interest rates for times when you do need a loan such as a mortgage for a home. So there's so many benefits to paying your bills on time. Am I saying you can never have debt now you can have debt but pay your debt on time.
Pay your mortgage on time. I realized circumstances can arise. You can have health problems, you can have career problems, setbacks get fired, and you can't do that. Realize that at that moment, your productivity is going down the drain. So anytime you can live lower than your means, it's generally going to be better to save money for those times when you do have a rainy day. So, what happens to people when they can't pay their bills, it creates anxiety.
People can't sleep at night if you can't sleep, guess what that does? It destroys your personal productivity. Knowing your bills are paid for most people makes it easier to sleep well, that doesn't guarantee it, you might still have a sleepless night, but it lets you sleep better in general. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. famous movie producers and directors and stars like special Michael Moore famously got their start by funding their first movie on credit cards and you get another credit card, another credit card to pay off this credit card. And next thing you know, you spent $100,000 on your movie, you got $100,000 in debt, but the movie takes off.
You win a lot of awards. You make millions of that you pay off the credit card. Everything's fine, right? Why not do that, though? The problem is, we've heard about Michael Moore, we've heard about Spike Lee. We haven't heard about the 10,000 other people who did that, whose movie didn't sell and they just ended up with $100,000 in debt.
They just ended up with bankruptcy. They just ended up with horrible credit. And everything is more difficult. When you have horrible credit. You may not aspire to have a big house or really even any house. But when you have bad credit It can hurt you in a lot of ways.
Now, this is not a personal finance course. But I just want to give you the big picture items which is going to be a productive person, pay your bills, pay them on time. You don't have to be the next Warren Buffett investor and become a billionaire. But if you always pay your bills on time, it frees up so much more time and capital capital to do the things you really care about.
