One last tip on news. I'm going to do something right now that I should have done a while ago, there's a news app on my cell phone. I'm hitting delete right now because even though I try to be disciplined on news, I still have things from the Huffington Post other news sources that are automatically pushed to my phone, and then that pushes it to my watch as well. It's more distractions. So that's the other big, big problem with news is not just that, overall, you might spend an hour in the morning an hour at lunch an hour in the evening, consuming it wasting three hours. It's that it's constant distractions throughout the day.
Oh, breaking news, and then you hear something in it. Some celebrity who is getting divorced and you know nothing about this person. You don't know their spouse. Why should you possibly care about someone you don't know? Getting divorce. So that's it.
The other big problem with news it's not just that it scoops up a huge chunk of an hour of time here an hour of time there. It's throughout the whole day being pushed to you on Facebook, on your cell phone on your watch, because they want you to attract your attention. That's how they make money. They deliver your eyeballs to advertisers. You don't have to give it to them. I promise you, unless you are in the news business full time.
If you just limit yourself whether it's a half hour in the morning, half hour in the evening, 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening, if you limit yourself to that. Nothing bad will happen to you. You will still be able to function. You will not get in any trouble unless it's your business. I mean, if you're in charge of public relations, and major company that's different. But for most of us who are not in a news or news related business, really limit yourself get rid of all the instant flashes, unsubscribe to the news sources on your Facebook page, just go to that news source.
In the morning when you I go to the New York times.com every morning and I look at their headline stories. I don't need it pushed to me on my Facebook page. I don't have to follow them on Twitter or LinkedIn or anyplace else. narrow your focus. This will free up your time dramatically. One last thing about news and I'll get off this hobbyhorse completely and I mean completely eliminate any news consumption you have about a celebrity and I guarantee you nothing bad will happen in your life.
You'll have a lot more time to spend with your kids, family, friends time to write that novel that new business plan. If you don't learn About the latest bankruptcy of a Hollywood star the latest divorce the latest spat so and so got in with this starlet. Look, I like entertainment. I like going to movies. I like going to Broadway shows. I like entertainment.
I don't really need to know any news about entertainers. All I need for them is to deliver the entertainment. Once you realize that, you can save hundreds of hours of time, per year in your life to do productive things. So please, you see any news story even if it's some celebrities doing good things, just don't read it. Don't watch it. You'll have more time to be productive.
