If you're a freelancer and you want to impress clients and prospects, here's a quick tip. Never call yourself a home based business. Don't go to other websites on how to have a home based business because here's a little secret. There's no such thing as a home based business. There's only one type of successful business I've ever heard of. And that is a customer based business.
Everything you do, is got to be focused on meeting the needs of your customers. Now, it just so happens that most of the time when I'm doing my work, I am in my own home, I traveled to my clients all over the world, and train at their location. Sometimes I'll rent a space for the day for a studio in Manhattan or other cities. But I don't ever refer to myself as having a home based business. Now there were many years when I had Add office space and full studios that I rented and paid a lot of overhead for in Manhattan that can work for people sometimes. But realize your whole focus has got to be on your customers.
If you go into this thinking, well, I just want a home based business because I like to be at home. I don't like to drive traffic, wrong, wrong approach. But here's the thing in the modern era, customers don't really care where we are. There was a time when in many industries, the clients judged the freelancers or the service providers based on their office address and how nice the lobby was. And my experience, those days are over even big corporations. major financial corporations idea with major mutual funds.
These days when they're looking for a new PR firm, they tell me Teach, we don't care if they have an office or not, we just care about the results. They don't care if it's a shared space or we works, something where the conference room was rented for two hours for a meeting. Just doesn't matter. Nobody cares about that anymore. They care about the results. That's what I'm hearing from large clients and medium sized clients and small clients as long as you focus on the results for your clients.
Doesn't matter if you're based at home, on the beach, in your swim trunks at the pool, it doesn't really matter. But just don't lose sight of the fact that you're not based in your home. You are based on your customers success.
