I just talked to you about productive people working fewer hours during the day. Here's the thing. They also take more breaks. This idea that if you just sit in your chair and grind it out, you'll be more productive. It's not backed by the research. productive people get up.
Now. There's all sorts of various experts who claimed you got to get up exactly every 25 minutes, some say 30 minutes once an hour. I am agnostic on the exact number of minutes you should be sitting before standing up and stretching. But I do think it's extraordinarily helpful for your brain and your body to get up and move around. From time to time I try to never sit for more than 20 minutes or so before getting up. I may go check the mail.
I may check something outside. I'm fortunate enough to work from a home based office most of the time when I am working on location and training people I'm standing Yeah, most of the day I try to actually stand and walk most of the day. The brain is hardwired, to be more productive and think when there is movement, just standing in one place can make you static. That's why I'm not afraid to get up frequently to get a drink water. Get more water, and I like to work in different locations. Again, I'm pologize that that sounds like I'm bragging but I'm lucky enough to work from home and I work from a lot of different places at home.
I have a home based studio here where I just stand. I'm not sitting here. I have another main office, but I may work on decks outside living rooms, different parts of the day. That gives me an excuse to walk around stretch. Rest when my daughter was younger, she's now in kindergarten. I would typically get up and see her at least once an hour and give her a big hug and play with her for a couple of minutes.
These Constant breaks don't detract from productivity, they enhance productivity. Now, if you're really in the flow and you're creating a masterpiece and you've been sitting for 25 minutes, don't feel like you have to get up just to stretch and do jumping jacks. But don't wait until your arms and legs have fallen asleep and you've been in the same spot for six hours either. Get up, take breaks, go outside, get fresh air, it will make you more productive.
