A lot of discussion these days about telecommute at home offices where their productivity is higher in an open office space, closed office space working from home, split routine where you're at the office some and also at home, some highly productive people, I believe, don't look at it from that perspective. They have an office, their office is right here. In today's knowledge economy, today's information economy is your brain that creates productivity that creates value. So your office is essentially here. And you can't go anywhere without this. Now, again, I'm not saying you can't go hiking in the Grand Canyon for a week and forget all about work.
But the mentality has to be you're always learning you're always experiencing new things. You're always sharpening your brain, you're improving your brain. And when you are focused on work and being productive, you can do it from anywhere. Now, I spent a lot of my time working from a home office outside of New York City. And today I'm shooting this in my own TV studio, which is just an old closet. But I also like to spend about 25% of my time in New York City.
And I could be just as productive in the New York City Library or working from a Starbucks, or from where I stay in New York City. I spent a lot of time on airplanes, traveling to countries all over the world conducting media training and presentation training. And a long time ago, I thought of this, well, this is downtime. This is lost time. Well, now. Now.
It's just more productive time when I'm on a plane. That's a great time to read and research information for my next course. It's a great Time to create notes for my next course or a next book or next blog post. So it's not that I can't switch off and just watch a silly movie I can and I do. But this concept of you want to be productive, you can be productive. Now today, whenever you decide you don't have to be in front of your desk, you don't have to be away from everyone else.
That doesn't have to be some perfect environment of absolute quiet. And the bust of Thomas Jefferson right here staring at you know, productive people can work from anywhere because these days really productive people tend to have global businesses so they tend to either be traveling around to different offices or traveling around visiting with clients or giving speeches in different places and you may not aspire to any of that. But the point is, you can be productive anywhere What that means is it opens up your life to more possibilities. Your vacations can be longer because it can blend together, you can be productive, you're going somewhere for work, as I often do for one or two days, I may extend it to five or six days because I want to explore a different region of the world. If I'm in a country in Africa, I've never been to, I'm not going to just go for a one or two training and come back.
I'm going to spend a week there. But a lot of that time in that week, when I'm not doing a training or a speech, I will spend time working because my office is here. Office is anywhere that makes me more productive, and that will make you more productive, but it's a mindset change. You can't tell yourself, oh, I'm not in the office, so I'm not gonna do anything productive today. Your office is right here.
