Okay, welcome to lesson number two getting the most out of your roadmap. Now I hope that you signed your commitment letter to yourself and let's focus on how to get the most out of this course. Now this course was written to go hand in hand with the workbook, so make sure you that you have it with you. As you watch each lesson. The course was written with interactive exercises to keep your focus by fill in the blank, matching multiple choice questions, and some other fun exercises. So the lessons are going to be in the form of allegory and metaphors and I'm gonna have fun relating different story.
So I want you to take part of that too and put yourself in my situation in many cases. In other words, I just want you to have fun in this learning process. Now my journey is not the same as your journey, it may be similar but it is going to be slightly different. So this will allow you to adapt the exercises and the techniques to fit your life in to fit your situation. And I'm going to show you how these techniques and ideas have worked for me and I want you to adapt them to your life into your situation. Now, I've suffered from anxiety most of my life and it has robbed me of so much.
And I refuse to let its power control me any longer, which reminds me of a cute little story in the TV series West Wing, and it really focuses on anxiety and PTSD is the name of the episode. This particular one if you want to look it up is called Noel. And right now in this episode is Christmas time. And our main guy here in the story is a guy named Josh Lyman and he's the deputy chief of staff to the president of the United States. Our guy here, Josh Lyman had been struggling for the past couple weeks with PTSD because in the season finale of the previous season, he was shot. Now getting shot is a big deal.
And this has caused anybody to go through some really deep emotional trauma. So of course, we know that he's already having some personal internal struggles. Now, in this particular episode, Josh is having a hard time at the White House Christmas party, and he's looking around and everybody's you know, seems to be having fun and he's getting really annoyed. And you know, you got to ask why. And if you saw the previous season, you know why? He's especially frustrated because there was a fighter pilot who was also suffering from some trauma and having some anxiety and he flew his f 16 into a mountain.
Now, obviously this this kind of hit Josh pretty hard. He was already having a hard time but the thing about It was Josh and this fighter pilot happen to share the same birthday. So he's having some personal reflection. So it really affected Josh. A little bit harder. And, you know, Josh here are, who is our, our hero in the story was pretty upset.
It seemed like nobody really cared. And in the following scene, Josh is in a meeting with the president united states, it kind of snaps at the president. I mean, could you imagine that? Now, Josh's boss is a guy named Leo and Leo is another character who also happens to be in the same room when Josh kind of snapped at the President of the United States. And so Leo, you know, kind of panicked a little bit and he tells Joshua says, Listen, you need to go see Dr. keyword. Now Dr. keyword is with the American trauma victims Association.
So now it's obvious that Josh doesn't want to go see the doctor and so he's frustrated and when he gets to see the doctor you know he even kind of complains about his boss Leah saying you know he was an alcoholic and you know this that the other and so Dr. keyworth smart enough to kind of realize what's going on. He says, Hey, wait a second man. You are in nine kinds of pain. You don't even know what's going on inside you and so you're locked into damage control. Now of course, Dr. keyword is referring to Joshua's shooting incidents in the recent death of the F 16 pilot. Now Dr. keyworth is referencing Joshua's emotions and he was telling Josh that his emotions are trapped inside his body.
And so finally, Dr. Keyword tells Josh that he has post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD for short. Now Josh gets concerned and he starts to worry. The last thing you want to do and you're already worrying right is Well, that doesn't sound like something to let you have if you work work for the President. And so now, Dr. keyworth doesn't think that it's extremely serious. But he says, what we need to get you to do is to remember the shooting without reliving it. Well, in the next scene, Joshua is walking by his boss.
And, you know, it's Leo, of course, and Leo is also his friend. And, you know, the you asked him what's going on and just says, well, the doctor says that I have PTSD. Now, Leo, being a very good friend realizes the concern on Josh's face. So he goes right into a store and he says this says this guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep, he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, hey, you can you help me out?
And the doctor pulls out his prescription pad and writes a prescription and throws it down in the hole and moves on. Well, a priest comes along and the guy shouts Hey, Father, I'm down in this hole. Can you help me out? And the priest writes up prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Finally, when a friend walks by, he says, Hey, Joe, it's me. Can you help me out?
And the friend jumps in the hole and a guy says, Are you stupid? Now? We're both down here. friend says, Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out. So what I want you to know is that you don't have to get shot or have a diagnosis of PTSD to get the point to the allegory in this story. I've been where you are.
Where I am now you can fall and Sunday, you can show someone else how to get out of their hole, which seems to have walls so steep, they can't climb out either. So the last point that I want to make about getting the most out of your roadmap can be summed up by the very famous Aristotle. Aristotle said, Those who know do those who understand teach. Now one in five people in America and worldwide suffer from anxiety. So if something strikes you as profound during these lessons, share it with a friend or family member. Now, you don't have to, obviously, but if the opportunity arises, I think it just maybe a way that God is giving you the opportunity to help a friend out of a hole.
