The fact is you can have the best of intentions in complimenting someone, however, putting bought in a sentence will kill you compliment. For example, Dave, you've had a great year. And so the work you've done is truly fantastic. But I'd like to share something that I think will make you even better, but just killed the compliment. Take the same scenario, replacing but with and and see the difference.
