Okay, let's clear the air right now on some controversial issues about differences between men and women. Certainly, there are some differences. And certainly men have some unfair advantages and certain things. And some they would argue our fair advantages. Line up 100 men in general, they might be able to do more push ups than 100 women of the same age and general physical abilities. But that's not what you have to do on stage.
Here's the great news for women who want to do public speaking. All the things that men can even claim to be doing better than women. Don't apply in public speaking. Your strength doesn't matter. For that matter height doesn't matter if you're on the stage in front of 1000 people you can be four foot 10 You're the tallest person in the room, you're higher up than everyone else. People are looking up to you.
Typically Things like strength brute force, they don't really help in public speaking at all, you can't grab someone and say, Listen to me, and make them enjoy your speech anymore. So that's the good news about public speaking, if you're a woman, and you've ever had a single interesting conversation with one person in your life, you already have all the skills you need to be a great public speaker. Now, I do work with a lot of women in business and government, and finance in many, many fields. And I can tell you, women can be as good if not better speakers than men, not by mimicking man, but by just doing good public speaking and we're going to focus on exactly what those things are in this course. Now, other things that are a little bit different. And excuse me if this sounds like gross generalization, but we are talking about the differences between Men and women in public speaking.
For example, my sources at the TED conference, the organization responsible for some of the best public speaking in the world, tell me that far fewer women accept invitations to speak at tip than do men. far fewer women nominate themselves and lobby themselves to speak at TED than men do. But the women speakers actually get a lot more views than the men do. And the theory behind some of the organizers is the women actually spend more time preparing, rehearsing. Certainly with my own clients, I can tell you that is in fact true. This is one of these things where the more you put in, the more you get at if you practice the right way.
Now other things that are different about men and women I have found and organizers of Ted and other groups have found you can be a man and Be on the job for two weeks. Someone asked if you want to speak to a major trade association about your industry. And the guy will say, Sure, why not sign me up. Even if they know almost nothing about the industry. A lot of women can be working in the street in the industry for five years and say, You know what? I'm not quite credentialed enough.
Let me wait another year then asked me. Now, of course, there are exceptions to the rule. But in general, that is what happens quite often. Thankfully, if you're here in this course, you're not going to be someone like that you're not going to turn down speaking opportunities, because one of the things that makes anyone a great speaker, a woman or a man is speaking more. The more you speak, the better you get. And that's something that is absolutely true, regardless of your gender.
I'm here to tell you, you can be an absolute fantastic world class speaker Regardless of your sex, there are some things that are specific to women. I will address that in the course. Let's hop right in.
