So are you ready for the big magic a drumroll please. Here's the secret to speaking without notes, or at least appearing to be speaking without notes. It's to have notes, but it's to have hold on before you ask for your money back. It's to have notes in a very specific way. This is an hour speech that I recently gave in Mexico City. It's got five big points.
And it's got a few words to remind you of stories and examples to remind me of stories and examples for each one. Now, this is I mean, here's a normal sheet of paper. So this is you know, about half the size of the piece of paper. Here's why I'm able to use this and appear as though I'm not using notes. It's on a single sheet of paper, so no one ever sees me picking it up and turn the pages. So that's one way I'm able to trick people.
The second step I made money larger font, and you can see it's large font, I don't have to put my glasses on if it's normal font on a piece of paper, I had to sort of stop and do this. And we've all seen people do that when they're giving speeches. But because I took two seconds to make the font larger, I don't have to put on my glasses. So that's a part of it. Now. My first message point is number one problem board.
I'm talking I'm giving a speech about public speaking. So that's only three words really well, there's symbols I guess you could claim it for. But very few words. So I'm not tempted to sort of start the speech with Well, the number one problem people have is being bought, I can simply glance at it reminds me of what I want to say. And I can now talk to people. So that's the key is you've got to streamline it.
Very few words. So It keeps you on track. And then I've got stories on MRI, I just put Prime Minister Slovenia because that reminds me of the story I'm going to tell about the time, I was training the Prime Minister of Slovenia. And he videotaped him. So we videotaped him together. I asked him to tell me what he thought after watching a speech, and he said to me, I'm really boring, I wouldn't want to watch me.
And I said, You're right, Mr. Prime Minister that went on, to be an eye opening moment for him to tear up his speech and start over the very same as I'm doing with you. So I only need a few words there to remind me of stories. You have stories in you too. I don't care. If you sell boring widgets. At some point, you're going to talk to a widget customer about how the old widget didn't work as well, and the problem you had and how it was solved.
So the beauty of a single sheet of paper is you're not touching it. You make the large font and you don't To pick it up. The other thing that requires practice is you need to get comfortable with this so that you can walk around sort of know when you're finishing and then glance at it and looked up. Because if you're finishing one thing, and then it's it's too quick, it's too jerky, it's calling attention to itself. Now one technique I like to use is putting the glass down right next to my notes. But it appears as though I'm just putting my glass down so nobody ever sees quick eyes movement.
Now I'm no magician, folks. But at some level, this is what magicians do. They are causing misdirection. Now I'm not doing anything to say look over here while I look at my nose. It's not like that. But I'm not trying to call attention to this thing here.
Now, here's the next big tip on how to not look like you're using notes. Don't stay Behind the classic lectern, if you stand right behind a lectern, and you put your notes right there, even if you aren't looking at them very often people are going to assume you are because that's what people do when they read boring speeches and read their notes all the time. They stand behind the lectern, and it's remembered, and they're looking down. So that begs the question to you, Joe will, where do you put your notes, I wouldn't hold them in my hands. If I were you. I would place them on a table quite often you'll have a table in a room where you're speaking, and it might be where your glass of water is.
So keep that in mind. Now, if you have a lectern, there's a place to stand right behind it, don't stand behind it. So if this is the lecture, and most people would have their notes like this, what I do is I turn my notes sideways. Now I can stand over here. be walking by, my eyes can scoop up. Look at the notes.
When I'm looking at people. You know what friends, I love technology. I love PowerPoint. I love video and love apps. This friend has never asked for electricity. This friend has never complained about malware or a virus.
This friend has never had a bowl burnout and tell me it's not going to work. That's the beauty of good old fashioned paper. And people aren't expecting it. Maybe you are using PowerPoint. That's fine. But you can just use images now you're not going to put your notes for the whole world to see your notes for right.
This is just for you. Don't tell anyone you're using it. Now I've never speak without notes. But I never tell anyone I'm using notes till the very end and the response is always the same for people. I had no idea you were using notes because I like to remind people my memories horrible. No idea what it's next to the speech or presentation.
I certainly don't want to stay up late the night before practicing again and begin again rehearsing memorize and that's hard work. I'd rather relax, have a glass of wine. So I'm not going to ask you to practice and rehearse memorizing till midnight if I'm not willing to do it. You don't need to, if you have notes Now, if you're telling me well, TJ, I tried that I couldn't get it to one page, I had to put it on two pages. That tells me You've done a very poor job of putting things in priority. So much of being a great presenter has nothing to do with your voice or your eyes or your hands.
And let's do with being a better editor. If you can't Edit your speech to a single sheet of paper with large thought you have not done a good enough job editing. Therefore your speech is probably going to be an awful failure because it's going to be a boring data dump because you're giving people too much stuff. So that's your homework assignment right now I need you to come up with a single sheet of paper. And like my it should fit on a half a sheet of paper. And this is an hour speech.
So if you're giving a 10 minute speech, you should have a lot fewer bullet points on there. I'm going to show you even more advanced techniques of how to use this to trick and fool your audience to an even greater extent. So that they're gonna walk out of this room swearing that you were just talking to them off the top of your head ad libbing because you're so passionate about this subject and really, you're going to be using notes the entire time, but come up with your outline right now. And I'll give you even more Advanced tips
