Hi everybody, in this short lecture, we're going to discuss conflict. Conflict is something that every good story has. And I'm sure that after just reading the first couple pages of your just write story that you've chosen to read for this class, you probably already have an idea that there's some kind of problem that needs to be solved in your story. And we're going to go through today and talk about four different types of conflict. Before we begin reading our novel and or short story and taking notes. The first type of conflict that I want to discuss is character versus character.

In this type of conflict, there is usually the protagonist who is the main character and the person that you're really rooting for in the story. The good guy if you want to say it that way, or guy or gal, right. And so the protagonist for As an antagonist who is the bad guy or the person going against the main character? So that's the first type of conflict character versus character. The second type of conflict is character versus society. That could be in a dystopian story where the society is going against certain right or wrong situation and the main character has to go against them in order to survive or get through some kind of problem and make everything okay for the rest of the people in the society.

And so that's the second type and this could also be seen in books about war. Okay, so character versus society is the second type of conflict. The third type of conflict that I wanted to discuss is character versus nature. This is where the character is climbing Mount Everest or stuck in the desert or there's a tornado coming after them. There's some kind of situation with nature where the main character may or may not survive because they're caught in a bad situation with nature. So the third type of conflict is character versus nature.

And the fourth type of conflict. The last type that I wanted to discuss really quick is character versus self. This is where the main character has to make some kind of important decision and they're not sure what to do about it, it usually has to do with something being right or wrong. What's the right choice? What's the wrong choice? Who would I hurt?

If I did this? Who would I help? And they have to make some kind of decision. Okay, so that's the fourth type of conflict. And the cool thing about literature is that sometimes we have a combination of more than one type of conflict going on at once. And it really keeps things interesting for us.

So you may have a character who is going against another character, and they also are going and getting themselves because they're trying Trying to make a choice about something whether it's right or wrong. And so there are many different variations of those four types of conflict and you can have more than more than one happening at once. And if you do, it's usually really interesting. Okay, so those are the four types of conflict. And I'd like for you in your activity to, as you're reading, be thinking about which types of contract conflict are occurring in your novel or short story right from the beginning, it should be happening within the first few pages. In our next lecture, we're going to get into taking notes as we read and I'll go through some really effective note taking strategies that will help you remember what's happening in your story.
