Welcome back. In this lecture, we're going to choose a book. So exciting. Hopefully you have several books that are at your just right reading level that you chose in your last activity. I have a few here that I've brought over just to kind of demonstrate what we do next. And the first thing that you really want to do when you're deciding which book to read, is think about the genre.
Is it something that you already are interested in? If you know that you like that type of movie, or you've read books in that genre before that would be a good sign that you might enjoy another book in that same genre. And there are so many different genres there. For example, this would be like a thriller. This is more of a contemporary fiction with some emotional drama stuff. It's about a girl in in a coma and deciding whether or not she wants to return to her life, and then this is a historical novel.
And I know that I enjoyed another book by this author. So that's why I grabbed this one. So what you can do when you're deciding on which book you're going to choose this week, is think about the genre and whether it's something that you already know you enjoy. And then think about the subject matter. Is it something you know a little bit about, because if it is, it'll be easier for you to read the book because you have some prior knowledge that you can activate and it'll help you with your speed. But if it's something that you want to learn something new about, then that's also great.
Your purpose for reading could be to be entertained, or with like action or romance, or feel a certain emotion like if you're reading a horror genre and you want it to feel scared. or historical where you want to learn something about the past science fiction possibly learn something about potential future. So those are all things that you can think about what is your purpose is that something you're already interested in something you know a little bit about and then go through and look at the cover and ask yourself whether or not the cover appeals to you and it's something that you find interesting. And then if it is look on the back and read the blurb on the back, or it might be on the inside, flap like this, and you can see what the novel is about and whether it's something you feel like you would care about, would you want to know what happened to those characters next, or what happened in that situation with the plot.
So read the blurb and then you can also read reviews about your book on Amazon. If you if you go online. There are tons of reviews for all kinds of books. Even if you just have library books, or books you have that were already on your own bookshelf, you could still look those up and read some reviews. Another place you can read reviews is goodreads.com. And that is a really good website for readers in general.
So I would recommend joining that if you if you're interested in keeping track of the books that you're reading and what you thought of them, because you can rate them and write reviews and other it helps other readers know whether or not they might be interested in reading that book and why. And actually, at the end of this course, we're going to write a book review for the book or short story that you are reading for this course. So we'll be doing that later. But now while you're choosing a book, it might be helpful to read some reviews, take them with a grain of salt, some people, you know, it might just be their opinion and just go by whether or not they are backing it up and with things that sound intelligent and whether They're not most people enjoyed it and why or why not.
So that's something you can do is look at the reviews. And then go ahead and look over your choices, research them a little. And then ultimately, what I'd like for you to do is choose the book or short story that you would like to read for this course. And we are going to in our next lecture, start talking about active reading strategies that you can use once we start your story. So, good job narrowing it down to a few different just write reading books and go through now and choose which book you're going to read for this course. I'll see you in the next video.
