Hello, everybody. Welcome to this C one advanced ca writing paper video course. In this video lesson, we're going to have a look at Part Two writing an email. So first, I will show you an example email question. We will then look at some advice for writing an email. We will critique the email, we will look at some examiners critique of the email.

And finally, we will have a look at some of the mistakes and how to correct them in the exam. So let's get started. So, here is an example email question. This is an informal email. It says this is an extract from the Email, your English speaking friend sent you. He will be coming to your hometown for a short stay.

It's a shame you won't be at home when we arrive. We'll only be there for a couple of days anyway. Would you be able to recommend a couple of places to visit while we are there? Something cultural or historical would be great. Write the email to your friend recommending two places to visit between 220 260 words. Okay.

So it's an informal email, which means that you can use informal language. Here, there is advice from the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. And if you haven't read this handbook how recommend you do so. And you can find this advice on page 32. I typing this web address here into your internet browser. For example, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox or Safari, Internet Explorer, etc.

So you might want to type that address in now, but we're going to continue and have a look this advice. So, letters or emails in a Cambridge English advanced writing paper will require a response which is consistently appropriate for the specified target reader. For example, the editor of a newspaper or magazine, to the director of a company, to a school or college principal, or to appear. So depending on which of these people you are writing to, or depend on which language you By using the example question on the page before, it's an informal email to appear. So, we know that that you can use informal language. But if you are writing to the director of a company or college principal, for example, then you are going to need to use different language to make sure you think about the target reader for your question.

And it says letters and emails will require candidates to carry out functions. For example, to reassure somebody to correct a misunderstanding, or to justify a course of action. Okay, so you need to carry out a function. The function from the input informal email question that we looked at was to explain and describe some things your friend did. Do tear is the email answer. Now before you read this answer, I'm going to show you the assessment scale that the examiners will use when they are marking your writing.

So you have four marking criteria during the subscales on the left, content communicative achievement, organization and language. I explain these in more detail in an earlier video in this course. So, if you can't remember what they involve, you should watch that video. But what I'd like you to do at the moment is to copy down this table onto a sheet of paper with a pen. And then I'd like you to give this email here. A Mark from one to five for each of those four marking criteria.

One is bad, and five is good. And I'd also like you to write comments about the content, communicative achievement, the organization and the language. So if you've given content to five you need to be writing Well, why? Why was the content I teria? Well fulfilled. So, you should pause this video for a minute now copy this table onto a sheet of paper.

Then we will look at the email and I will leave that on the screen for you to read. to pause this video now, copy this table onto a piece of paper. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And now what I would do is I Leave this email on the screen for you, so you can read it. And you can write down what you think in the comments and the marks in the table that you have on your piece of paper to pause this video now and complete the table, reading this email. When you're ready, press play.

Okay, so hopefully you've done that. Hopefully you have some detailed notes for your comments. Now what we're going to do is we're actually going to have a look at the marks and the comments that I gave this email. So you can see the marks I've given it a three, content three for communicative achievement. To organization to four language. And if you would like to see why I've given it those marks, you can read my comments here, the right hand side.

So what you should do is you should pause this video and you should compare my marks in my comments with your marks in your comments, and see if they're similar. Don't worry if they're not, but have a read of my comments in detail. Because if you understand what the examiners are looking for, you'll have a much better idea of what you need to write for the email in the exam, and how to get top marks each subsequent marking criteria. So pause this video now. Compare this table with your table. When you're ready, press play Okay, so hopefully you've done that.

And I hope that was really useful for you reading these comments. And you can see what the examiners are really looking for in the exam. And now what we're going to do is we're going to analyze this email, because I noticed that there were some mistakes with the language, email. It could be spelling mistakes, they could be grammar mistakes. It could be mistakes with the coherency means whether it's easy to understand the sentence or not. So I'd like you to pause this video again.

Have a read of these mistakes here and try to correct any mistakes that you find in these sentences. There will be at least one mistake in every phrase. So pause the video now. Try to correct mistakes. And when you're ready, press play Okay, hopefully you've done that. And now what we can do, let's have a look at my corrections.

First sentence for the future. In the present continuous is a better phrase to use for this. In this situation, it's definite thing that's happening. And it's not a shedule. Therefore, we need to use Present Continuous for the future in this situation. The second sentence worried is not the correct word to use.

She meant to say I'm afraid that she has similar expressions saying, I'm sorry. I'm worried different meanings. In this sentence, sometimes worried and afraid are similar. But in this sentence afraid can also mean you're sorry about something. I'm afraid that means I'm sorry that I'm worried that never means I'm sorry. The next sentence, when normally said to wait for something, or to wait for someone, and we say this place because it's the place when a speaker is when they are right.

The next sentence we need to use the present perfect tense here. And in order to complete the present perfect tense, you need the subject and then the word have or has, and then the past participle in the past participle of C, is seen as an add on The next sentence we don't have the words especially in English, it's always, especially the beginning. next sentence, we normally say parties in a place in a town. It's town. Let me say in the town it's a specific place, we might say at. We're just saying in the town, town in general we say in town.

And I would also say the festival. Citizens of Venice used to arrive to the other side of the canal. Usually arrive to place when they are in her. Missed the why spelling mistake. We always say have a Nice day, it's just one day, so we need to use the article. Nice day.

Okay, so for homework, you should write an answer to an email question. You can use the same email question that are used in this presentation. If you write an answer to this question on computer, you can email me your writing questions at student languages calm. And if I have time, I will mark it for you and give you feedback based on this official marking criteria. I will also post it on my website for you to see and I will tell you when it's on my website, but if you email it to me, you need to be aware that I will put it on my website For you and other students to learn. Finally, you should read the Cambridge English advanced handbook teachers.

This is a really useful handbook. I advise it to all my students to read this before taking the C one advanced exam, loads of useful information in there. You can access that by typing in this web address here and your internet browser. Okay. And if you would like to book live lessons with me, you can write to me at admin, student languages calm and I will write back to you about my lessons. We can do individual lessons or group lessons and they can be about this part of the exam or any other part exam.

Okay, so I hope you enjoyed this video lesson. And in the next video lesson, I'm going to show you some advice for writing a letter, sample letter question, sample letter answer. We're going to critique this letter, and we're going to look at some examiner comments in the letter. And finally, we will look at some letter corrections and mistakes. See you in the next lesson guys. Bye bye
