Hello, everybody, and welcome to my Cambridge English advanced reading paper video course. In this lesson, we're going to be focusing on Part Eight of the reading and use of English. So, you're going to learn the best tips, technique and strategy to use for this part of the paper. And we're also going to practice with some real sample papers. So Part Eight is called multiple matching. How many questions are there in Part Eight?
There are 10 questions. How many texts or passages Do you need to read? you'll either have one split text or you will have four or five smaller text and how many options can you choose from You have four or five different options to choose from. Because if you have one longer text, it will be split into four or five sections. Or maybe you have four or five smaller, separate text. So time for my first tip.
I suggest you read through all the questions and underline the key words in the question. And then tip number two, you should read the whole text or the whole passage very quickly to understand what it's about. You should take no more than one minute to do this. Okay, so let's practice this. So what I'd like you to do is to open the Cambridge English advanced 2015 sample paper for document which you can do by typing this web address here, and your internet browser. And if you do that, you'll find a page, which looks like this.
We need to scroll down to Part Eight, which is on page 14 questions here. This is where the passages on page 15. If you look at page 14, I would like you to do is to underline and if you can print off the sheet that's even better. But if not, maybe you have to try and find a way of underlining on your computer. Or you can just think about which words are the most important. But yeah, I'd like you to underline or highlight key words.
From each of these questions, so I just want you to take about one minute to do this. So when you're ready, press pause. And then once you've underlined the key questions after about one minute or so, press play. Maybe you highlighted or underlined different words to me, but this is subjective. So it doesn't matter if you're if you're underlining so your highlights are different. Okay, time for my next tip.
Tip number three. You should read through The first section which is Section A in detail, then you should look back at each question and then you should write a next to every question that you think is answers. So if you think a answers question 42 right a next 42 think it answers question 45 right at 45, etc. And then you should repeat this process for all the sections. So then look at section B in detail right, be next every question that you think he has the answer to. If you put more than one letter next to each question, and you have time, you should read through the relevant sections again, before making a decision.
Okay, so let's practice this If you look at pages 14 and 15, from this document again, what I'd like you to do is to write down the letter A next to every question that you think it answers. So you need to read through section eight and page 15 here and then write down a next each one of these questions that you think it answers. Okay, so you can pause this video now. And when you're ready, press play. Okay. So these are the questions which I wrote the letter A next I wrote a next question 50 to ensure your boss is able to argue your case to higher authorities.
Maybe you have the same if you do, that's great. Not, don't worry. This is your first go. So it can be quite difficult. This is the technique that you should use. When you're practicing in the future.
We'll do the same thing Section B, and Section C, Section D. You can do for homework, and I explain a bit more about that at the end of the lesson. So time for my next tip. If you run out of time, or if you're unsure of an answer, you should just write anything. Just write any letter, because it's better to write something than to write nothing. You can't lose marks for writing an answer. You can only gain marks.
So definitely write an answer for every question. Okay, so for homework, you should follow the tips and techniques from this lesson to complete this sample paper here, particularly focusing on pages, 14 and 15. G's, the tips and techniques that I've told you so you've underlined the highlight and highlighted the key words. Then you read through Section A and write down a next every question you think is applicable, then read through Section B might be next to every question you think it answers and then see write down see next every question you think it answers. Then if you've got two letters next to one question, read through the two sections again, and make a decision. What you should do is you should follow these tips and techniques from this lesson.
Might want to watch the video again, to remind yourself or maybe even write down tips and techniques. Follow them in the order that I go through in the Lesson, use that same order to complete some similar exercises, similar Part Eight exercises in a course book. And if you type in this web address into your browser, you will see this course book. This is a really good course book that I recommend to all of my students has lots of practice examples in there.
