Hello, everybody, welcome to my Cambridge English advanced c one advanced exam video course. This video lesson we're going to be focusing on part three of the use of English paper. So there are four different parts in the use of English paper. And as I said, we're going to be focusing on part three, which is called Word formation. So I'm going to teach you the best tips and technique for part three of the use of English paper, the best strategy and we're also going to do some practice examples to use this strategy and make sure that it becomes more natural for you. So when you go into the exam, you know exactly what you need to do you know exactly the strategy to follow to get the best marks in part three of these English paper.

So how many questions are there in part three? There are eight questions. How many texts or passages? Do you need to read? Just one. How many options can you choose from?

No options to choose from? And do you need to change the word given? Yes, you did. So, my first tip, you should read the whole passage very quickly scan overall understanding of what the topic is about. It'll be easy to find the answers if you understand the whole topic, and the overall idea. So let's practice this.

What I'd like you to do is to type in this web address here in your internet browser, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, whatever internet you're using, type in this web address here. Pause this video if you need to. When you're ready press play. And once you've done that, you will find a page, which looks similar to this Cambridge English language assessment certificate in advanced English reading and use of English self paper for it's an older exam paper. So there are some instructions, which would be really useful for you to know before you go into the exam. pay yourself and what we're going to do is to scroll down to page number five, we're going to focus on part three.

You can see this is what the exam format looks like this part of the exam. You have some gaps in a text and you have some words at the end of the line. Remember what we need to do is to change this word to change the the form of this word actually Just change the form of the word. So it fits in the cap. I've copied it into my presentation here, but it might be easier for you to read it in this web page, which is why I asked you to open it up. What I'd like you to do once you have that open and you're looking at page five is to answer these two questions at the top here.

And what I also want you to do is to try and answer them in only 30 seconds each. So question number one, the author says the ability to switch quickly between languages also makes them good at multitasking. So I want you to pause the video and time yourself for 30 seconds and try to find the answer to this question. And then I want you to do the same thing for them too. So take 30 seconds to try to find the answer to number two. The author says multilingual people are better at remembering lists of sequences.

So pause the video now. Time yourself 30 seconds try to find out number one, then do the same thing number two, when you're ready, press play. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. Let's have a look at my answers. Number one, the author says the ability to switch quickly between languages also makes them good at multitasking. Yes, he does.

When we can find the answer to this question here in the passage. And number two, the author says multilingual people are better at remembering lists of sequences. Yes, he does. And we can find the answer to that here in the passage. Okay, so time for my next tip number two You should locate the first question or the first gap that you need to fill. And then read the whole sentence that the gap is in read words before in the words after the gap.

Then you need to identify the words surrounding the gap by their form, and that position in the sentence. So what you need to do in order to help with this is to type in this web address in your web browser, internet browser. You'll find a page that I wrote about different types of words, adjectives, nouns, adverbs, and how they, how they fit into a sentence, what they look like, what their word endings are, etc. Because you need to know this for the exam. It's really useful for every part of the exam, and specifically for the use of English paper. So yeah, make sure you can identify words by their form, and I mean the ending of the word normally What tells you the form of the word and also make sure you can identify words by where they are in a sentence, for example, is this word before an adjective is this word after a verb, etc.

So as I say, typed this into your web browser, this will be a really useful start for you. Learning about different types of words and their position in a sentence if you don't know that already. type of tip number three. Before doing the exam, you should spend some time learning about word endings. Okay? And, for example, words which end in Li normally adverbs, and not always, because in English, there are often exceptions to rules.

But, more often than not, if a word ends in l, y, will probably be an adverb. And this type of information is really useful for the exam. So make Spend some time learning about the endings of words, what type of words and what letters, etc. Tip number four, you need to read the whole sentence again. After you've thought about what type of word you need, make sure word you've selected matches the meaning of the sentence. So after you've decided, for example, that you need a noun in the gap, you then need to make sure that this word actually matches the meaning of the sentence.

The form of the word is one thing but the meaning is another thing doesn't actually match the meaning because sometimes there can be one word from a word family, which has two different nouns. The ending the work could be different. So you need to make sure that the word you choose matches the meaning of the sentence as well as the In the correct form, being the correct type of word. You should watch out for negative words, for example, unproductive. And depending on the overall meaning of the sentence paragraph, from my experience in this part of the use of English paper, you will have at least one or two questions, you will need to write in the negative form to make sure you read over the whole over sometimes that the whole sentence but sometimes even the whole paragraph, in order to understand you need to be using positive word or negative word that can save you a couple of crucial marks in the exam.

So that's really important point as well. If you need a negative word, you need to think what is the appropriate prefix for this word, is it m, this is m, etc. Just before I finish about that if you get a good course book. For example, this one I recommend to lots of my students. There will be exercises in this course book about prefixes, word prefixes. And they're really important to study before going into the exam as well to make sure you understand the rules surrounding prefixes.

And to make sure you understand exactly what you need to do to make a word with the correct graphics. Tip number five, check your spelling. In all parts of the use of English paper, you will lose marks words are not spelled correctly. So this is a really, really important point, make sure you check your spelling. After you've written a word, you don't want to lose marks through spelling mistakes, it's a really bad way to lose marks. If that's difference between passing and failing the exam, you're going to be really really annoyed.

So make sure you check your spelling for every part of the use of English paper. And just in general, when you're practicing before the exam, Make sure you make sure you're really focusing on your Spelling's. If you write an essay for example, go back over check your Spanish. Okay, so let's practice this now. What I'd like you to do is to look at the passage below, which has again come from this page five, part three. From this web address, Chair asked you to type in earlier in the lesson.

I've copied it over here. It might be easier for you to read it here. Or it might be easier for you to read it in your internet browser. What I'd like you to do is to think what type of word Do we need for question 17. So follow the tips that I've taught you up until now. Think about the type of word that you need is in the correct ending.

Target for the meaning of sentence, do you need a prefix to make it negative? Make sure you check your spelling and that you've written the spelling correctly. do all of those things and try to come up with the answer to this question. You can press pause. Now, when you're ready, you think you have the answer to this question, press play, and we'll have a look at it together. Okay, so hopefully you've done that.

This is what I say for questions. 70. The word we need type of word we need as a possession, possession your something and the word we need is a thing or something. So what we need to use here is a noun we need to use a noun in this sentence in the gap. The noun from the word family aware is awareness. So awareness is the correct answer.

Does it need to be in the negative form? No. Have I spelt it correctly? Yes. So that's the strategy that you need to follow. And you should follow the tips and techniques in the same order as this in the exam.

You should also do that now to complete this page here to complete part three of the use of English paper here. And if you want to check your answers, you can scroll to the bottom of this document. And at the bottom, there is an answer key. So we can see for example number 17 is awareness. That was the correct answer. But also, what I'd like you to do is to buy a course book because you need more practice, you need a lot of practice to get really good to get good enough marks in order to pass the exam.

So you should buy a course book. If you type this web address into your browser. You'll see this cost book here. And what you need to do is again, use the tips and techniques I've taught you in the same order to complete part three exercises from this course book. If you get, keep doing that over and over using the tips and technique to complete the part three exercises, eventually it will become so natural that once you get into the exam, you'll know exactly what you need to do. You'll need you'll know the strategy to fully complete the exam in the best possible way.
