Hello, everybody. Welcome to this video lesson where we're focusing on the C one advanced as the Cambridge English advanced exam. And we're going to be focusing on part one of the listening paper. So, yeah, let's have a look at the listening paper. How long does the listening paper last? It lasts for 40 minutes.
How many parts are there in the listening paper? This paper has has four different parts. And how many questions are there in total? There are 30 questions in the listening paper in total. And I say that you need to write your answer on the question paper. And then at the end, you transfer your answers.
So you have about five minutes I think it is to transfer your answers from the question paper to the answer sheet. And you need to write in capital letters. So big letters Yeah, you're transferring offices. And I say there is an example art sheets on page 74 of the Cambridge English advanced teachers Handbook, which you can find, if you type in this web address, go to page 74. The page numbers are at the bottom of the pages in this handbook. Okay, these are the different question types.
So in part one, you have multiple choice, part two, sentence completion, part three, multiple choice part for multiple match. But we are going to carry on and look at Part One of the listing paper. So, the rest of this video lesson, you're going to learn the best tips technique, strategy, and have some really useful practice exams. Follow for part one of these things. So Part one is a multiple choice part. How many questions are there in part one?
There are six questions. How many different listening extracts Do you need to listen to? You have three different extracts to listen to two means you have two questions for each extract. How many options can you choose from? You have three options to choose from each question. And how long do you have to read through the questions?
You have 15 seconds for each set of two questions. So 15 seconds for the first two questions. 15 seconds for questions three and four and 15 seconds to read through questions five and six format listening extracts begins Okay, and to remind ourselves from the Cambridge English advanced handbook teachers, they tell us that this part of the listening paper tests the candidates ability to listen to short dialogues to show understanding of just as well as detail, function, agreement, and course of action as well as the speaker's purpose, feelings, attitudes, and opinions. So you could be tested on a few different areas of the language. So here's my first tip. I suggest that you read through two questions.
So questions one and two, and underline the key words. So you have 15 seconds before begins to read through questions one and two. In that 15 seconds you should underline The key words, but just in the question, you can ignore the A, B and C options, just look at the question and underline the key words. Okay, this is what it looks like. You can find this on page 58. If you go to this link down here and type that into your web browser, you can go to page 58 and find a better version or a more clear version of these questions here.
Okay, so now I'm going to show you where you can find some practice examples. What you need to do is open an internet web browser, for example, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox, and type this web address into your internet browser. So that's What I've done here and then what you've done that can scroll down the page you'll find something down here at a table which says listening. And if you click on sample paper and audio files, it would download documents onto your computer which may take some time. And once that's finished downloading, you should be able to open this folder and it will look like this. And in here, we have lots of different parts of the listening paper.
And they're all from sample paper one. There are some audio tracks as you can see in mp3 format now Also answer keys and questions in PDF files. So you need to open this here where it says sample paper one, listing v2. If you open that, and then scroll down to page two, it should look like this. Okay. And I've copied this page into my webs into these slides here.
So we can read them here as well. And now what I'd like you to do is to underline the most important words that you think are in question number one, question number two, and you can just ignore the A, B, and C options. Now, so pause this video if you need to. It's really useful. Maybe if you could print off this document here, you can print it off. If you have a printer, that's fantastic.
Or just think to yourself, okay, which words would I underline which words would I underline from this question here? And question number two. So pause the video, have a think about that. And when you're ready, you can click play. Okay, so let's have a look at the words which I underlined. So in question number one, underline the words college publicity and disagree about I think these are the most important words.
And if I've underlined them, those are what I'm focusing on. So when I listen to To the extract, I'm really going to be focusing on these ideas college publicity and disagree. What do they disagree about? And for number two underlined, companies link and which charities. Okay, so companies link with charities, companies, liquid charities, I'm thinking, why? Why do companies liquid charities, that's what I'm going to be listening for in the extract.
So, type tip number two. Some words from the listenings are deliberately created to distract you from the correct answer. These are called distractors. So to avoid these distractors, I suggest a cover up the A, B, and C options, so you can't see them until after you've Listen to the passage. That's why I said just underline the most important parts of the question. Don't even look at A, B and C. Don't underline anything from ABC.
Don't even look at them. Just read that first question. That's a good way to avoid these distractors. Then, because you get to listen to every extract twice, after the first listing, and you're still not looking at the options, you should think to yourself, what is the answer to this question? So cover a, b, and c read the question and think what is the answer? What do I think is the answer to this question?
And then you can uncover the A, B and C options. And then you can read them and see if one option is the most similar to what you thought. This is a really good technique which I teach all of my students that always surprised at how effective this is. technique is, then, when you listen the second time, you can confirm what you thought you can confirm it is the A B, or the C option that is most similar to what you thought. Okay, so let's practice this. I want you to open the listening PDF, which I showed you before, in terms of page two, which again, looks like this.
So we're opening the PDF, which we downloaded from the website, opening this PDF here. And scrolling down, we have page one here and scrolling down to page two. It says extract one extract. Okay. Now what I want you to do, from the folder that you downloaded here should be some listening files. and here we can find listening part one, extract one.
That is exactly the listening extract that I now would like you to open and listen to. Okay? But what I want you to do is just to listen to this extract one time. And I want you to write down what you think is the correct answer to both questions one and question two. So this is question one here, and this is question two here. Again, we're ignoring the A, B, and C options.
We're focusing on specific areas, public college publicity, disagree, companies link with charities, and we're just listening to what we think is the correct answer both questions one and two. And I just want you to listen to it one time. Okay, so you can pause this video now. Have a listen to that extract once and write down what you think is the correct answer. When you have done that, press play. Okay, so for question one, I wrote down how much of an impact the environmental ratings have on their decision to go to university.
That's what I wrote down. So now what we can do is have a look at the three A, B and C options and see if what I've written is similar to any of those. So we have a how useful the environmental rating system is. Be how well the different courses are described and see how visually attractive the approaches are. So looking at these three options, and what I've written, I can see that my answer is the most similar to a. And now what I'm going to do is listen a second time to confirm my answer.
You can do this as well with what you've written down. Okay, so pause this video, and when you're ready, and you've listened to it a second time, and click, click play again. Okay, so now I've listened to this twice and I'm feeling pretty confident that A is the correct answer. And what we can do is actually have a look here at open up the answer keys PDF file. Which I've done here. And this is reading and use of English at the top.
So be careful about that. Let's find the listening answer key. Here we are part one. Question one. The correct answer is A. Just fantastic.
That's what I've written down. Okay. What about question two? So what did you write down? Question two. This is what I wrote down.
I wrote down do it to appear softer in the public eye. Now what I'm going to do is have a look at the A, B and C options. A boost their profits, B, improve their image and society and see distract attention away from other issues. So my answer from what I've written down, I can see is most similar to be improved their image in society is appear softer in the public eye. public eye is how society perceive or see something. So now what I'm going to do is I'm going to pause this video, I'm going to listen to it a second time to confirm my answer.
So you can do the same thing. Pause this video now. And when you're ready, click play. Okay, so hopefully, you've paused the video isn't too second time, or you already knew from what you've done for the listing you've done before. read and listen to it twice. And yeah, let's see what I can say that I remember the woman mentioned that companies can ignore other issues.
But she doesn't say they do. It's to distract other people's attention from other issues. So it's not C. And she doesn't know if it increases sales either. So I don't think it's a, b is the correct answer. And that is the most similar to what I've written down initially after the first listing. So that's a really good technique to use when you're when you're practicing by yourself for the exam, and when you're in the exam.
So remember, read the question, ignoring the A, B, and C options, underline the most important parts. Then, listen to the extract. Write down what you think is the answer. Then quickly have a look at the A, B and C options think is it most similar to a or b or c? And then during the second listening, you could confirm Okay, I think was most similar to B? Is that what they're saying in the second listening?
Yes, it is. Okay, fantastic. So, this is your homework. You should use the strategy from this lesson to complete listening sample paper one, part one. You can download the paper in the audio files if you haven't done it already. I did show you how to do it earlier in this lesson.
