Hello again, this lesson provides you with the full solutions to activity one. Africa completing this lesson, you should understand the questions in activity one, understand the solutions to these questions and be a better power learner of mathematics. Here is question one. You were asked to write down a set of ordered pairs corresponding to the given arrow diagram. So look carefully at the arrow diagram. Do you notice anything in particular?

Well, element a is related to two elements, element B is related to two elements, and element C is related to just one. Now, do you remember what a set of ordered pairs is? From the diagram, we can identify some associated pairs. Our first pair is A and E. Next we have A and F, then B and E, B and G. And finally, C and H. So from the arrow diagram, a set of ordered pairs is this set with five ordered pairs. Question two, gives us three ordered pairs, and asks us to draw the corresponding arrow diagram. So examine the ordered pairs.

Notice that the number two occurs in two of the pairs. Remind yourself what an arrow diagram is, as you learned in lesson three, lists the first element of each pair, that's a, b, c, then the second element of each pair. Notice that two occurs in two of the ordered pairs, but only once in the arrow diagram. Now add the arrows according to the ordered pairs. And this gives us the solution, a set of ordered pairs and the corresponding arrow diagram. For Question three, we're given a set of ordered pairs and asked to create the corresponding table of values.

Again, look carefully at the ordered pairs to see if there's anything special or unusual. There are two patterns, the x values go up in threes 369 1215 and the y values go up in single steps 12345 now check your memory. Do you recall what a table of values is? There are five ordered pairs. So we need a table with two rows and five columns. The first value of each pair is the x value.

And the second value of each pair is the y value. So enter them like this. And we end with the set of ordered pairs and the corresponding table of values. Now Question four is a bit different. Use the ordered pairs from question three and find a relation. X is something to do with y.

Now we've already looked at these ordered pairs, and we've seen two patterns. But nevertheless, let's have another look. Here, we can see that three the x value is equal to Three times one, the y value. And six, the x value is equal to three times two, the y value, and nine, the x value is equal to three times three, the y value. So if we generalize, x is equal to three times y, or in words, x is three times y. Now, in question five, we have a table of values and have to find the matching ordered pairs.

Once again, study the numbers in the table. Is there anything special about it? Remind yourself what a set of ordered pairs is. Each pair of x and y values make up an ordered pair. So negative three and two, negative one and 00 nought point five, two and 4.5 and five and eight. So our solution is the table of values and its ordered pairs.
