Terminology

Shot: What is captured by the camera in one operation.

Scene: Several shots edited together.

Sequence: Several scenes edited together. Three sequences will equal a film: one beginning sequence, one middle sequence, one end sequence.

Continuity: Ensuring that scenes are shot and edited together to give the illusion that the story is unfolding along a linear path.

Wide or Long shot: The camera is far away from the subject. The camera takes in the whole scene and is not focused on the subject.

Medium shot: The characters and their environment are in equal balance. Introduces the characters to the audience.

Close-up shot: A face fills the entire scene. Brings us really close to the characters.

Establishing shot: A long shot that introduces us to the location.

Over-the-shoulder shot: When the camera peeks over the shoulder of one character to see the face or another.

Lockdown: Keeping the camera mounted and unmoving while filming.
