This is Ross common law again with lesson number 13. Honors and AP courses. In this lesson, we will explain the strength of curriculum a little bit more. Recall that colleges look favorably at high school students who take difficult courses which are above their level. There are generally three tiers of courses which constitute High School offerings. Tier One courses are on level so there is no GPA bonus, tier two, three AP honors three IB dual credit and certain approved career and technical education courses at GPS Bonus does apply here.
And tier three courses which are taught in high school, but and in a national or international exam like AP or IB. These courses attract the largest GPA bonus because they represent freshman year college level content, honors or pre AP courses. We know that advanced placement courses by far represent the highest degree of difficulty. In order to transition the student to do AP level courses, the College Board authorizes high schools to offer what are called free AP courses. Look at sequence for below as an example. The goal of The sequence is to challenge a student to take a college level math course in her 12th grade.
To get to this ambitious goal, the student has to start early. As early as the ninth grade when her friends are taking an on level geometry course in the ninth grade, she takes a pre AP course, studying more difficult concepts in geometry. For her effort, she is awarded grades on a bonus scale. In the 10th grade, she takes a free AP algebra two course. And in the 11th she takes a pre AP pre calculus course. This progress of preparation allows her to take any of six different but difficult college level math courses in her Assume that the student is on a GPA bonus scale.
As below we've seen this chart before. Her GPA bonuses will be as follows one point bonus in the ninth grade, one in the 10th, one in the 11th and a two point bonus in the 12th grade. If she earns the same number grade as her friends taking on level courses over four years, she would have earned five additional weighted average GPA points. This can have a dramatic impact on our overall GPA, class rank and ability to get into highly selective colleges AP courses Bob Muller Advanced Placement program is run by the College Board and not for profit membership organization of American colleges and universities that began in the early 1900s. Recognizing that many students in US high schools are gifted and talented, but not challenged enough in their high schools, the college board decided to roll out AP courses for high school students to complete before they even enter college.
The best incentive for such students is that by passing an exam, after paying a small fee, they earn credit hours that would directly transfer to the college that they would enter. These students could then either spend less money by taking fewer college credit hour classes or for the same money, take additional courses and graduate with a double major for us high school students participating in an AP program. requires that she first talked to a counselor or school. If a counselor agrees that she can handle the burden of a college level course, right in high school, she's allowed to take AP classes as part of her regular schoolwork. This is tough, but motivated students to handle the burden. Then the student appears for the AP exams conducted by the College Board in May.
If the student passes the exam, her credit record can be applied to the college that she will be going to. Because not all US high schools offer AP programs. The College Board has made it possible for students to take AP classes online and take the exam. In fact, taking AP classes is not even required. One can study at home and take the AP exam. SAP subject desks. Although not related to honors or AP courses, the College Board also offers sad Subject Tests for college prep courses. You will learn all about the LSAT in Lesson number 15. While the generic LSAT tests you on reading and math, the subject that's focused on specific topics. the look and feel of a SAT Subject test are identical to the generic LSAT, one our multiple choice tests, but Subject Tests penalize you for wrong answers. Many top colleges insist that you submit two to three sad Subject Tests.
So these may not be optional for you at all. Somebody talk to your school counselor about AP exams if it's the right move for you.
