Welcome back to spirituality mental health. I'm talking now about an assignment that I often give people on how to process anger. And one of the Psalms in horror songs you might say in Scripture that's recorded is Psalm 109. And if you ever wanted to be angry, this is gonna make you feel good because the whole thing is about someone who's angry. So let's see what happened in Psalm 109 verse one through four, it says this, do not keep silent, oh god of my praise, for the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful have opened against me. I have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause and return from my love. They are my accusers, but I give myself to prayer. So they're picturing themselves as very prayerful, they're godly, but other People have been deceitful, they've lied, they've been hateful, they thought without cause. And so they're not happy about they're there. They're angry. So let's look and see what the angry individual wants done about this first five through seven.
Thus they have rewarded me evil for good and hatred for my love. Set a wicked man over him and let him accuser standard, his right hand when he is just let him be found guilty and let his prayer become sent remember the last section, but I give myself to prayer. Now they want this person not even had a prayer that's effective, it becomes sent, let his days be few and let another take his office. Now that sounds to me a lot like court cases when people are in custody fights. They hire an attorney, an attorney, and the court case might go on for like an eternity But anyway, they hire an attorney and they attempt to you know, make the other person just lose big time. They invest all kinds of money in it.
Very upset. Have you ever been that angry? Have you ever been in a situation like that? Well, let's see what happens next. What does he want done not only to the person he's angry at but the person's children. Let His children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
I hope you've not been this angry, but I'm sure some half let his children can continually be vagabonds and beg in others method be homeless, let them seek their bread from among desolate places. Let the creditor seize everything he has and let strangers plunder his labor. So look, I want his kids to be fatherless be homeless, I want all his money to be lost. First 12 let their nun be there to extend mercy to him or let there be any to favor his fatherless children. Let his posterity that his kids again be cut off and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. This is a person who's pretty angry.
Now I hope that you've not been this angry but I bet you there's some people that are listening right now that have been that angry that very upset. And you know, this is why we have homicide. This is why I had genocide. This is we have people that are so angry. They would even go after the kids. But this Psalm is only warming up.
A man has not reached his full level of wrath. You're saying what he's can get more angry than that? Yes. It's like he went forward over the generations to come but now he puts the the 18 Wheeler he's driving in reverse and begins to back over people. What does he want done to those who have gone before to the forefathers? Verse 14, and 15 let the iniquity of his father's be remembered before the Lord and let not the son of his mother be blotted out.
So this is that kind of a reverse Father's Day and a Mother's Day. Are you angry at your father? Are you angry at your Mother, Mother, Mother, are you bitter about things that your parents have done? This is what this individual is dealing with. Let them be continually before the Lord that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth. Have you been that angry?
Are you that upset with your parents? You want to go in reverse in history? Now how does he justify his angry? This is an important part of the song because it's now showing this the real reason he's angry. Now as we read it. Let's see if you can discover it for 16 through 20, because he did not remember to show mercy but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart as he loved cursing so let it come to him, as he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him, as he clothed themselves with cursing as with a garment, so let it enter his body like water, and like oil in his bones, let it be to him like a garment which covers him and for a belt, which with which he gets himself continued.
Let this be the Lord's reward to my accusers, and to those who speak evil against my person. What was the reason That he was so angry, how did he justify his anger? While he said this person didn't show any mercy, so we shouldn't sell anything to him and he got so angry in this part, verse 18. He says, you know, let his cursing enter into His body like water like oil in his bones. It's almost like he's starting an IV transfusion and say, I want to burn this guy up from the inside out. Now have you ever been angry?
The Bible is describing someone that maybe is even angry then you've been and that's why I kind of liked the Bible because it talks about how really people are feeling. So let's see if we can find the real issue here in verse 21, through 26, but you all God the Lord, deal with me for your namesake, because your mercy is good Deliver me. Now here's the reason he's giving listen to this first 24 I am poor and needy, and my heart Who is wounded within me? What was the real reason for his anger? I'm poor. I'm needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
Is your heart wounded within you? Do you feel poor and needy, feel almost out of control. This guy's cold, totally out of control. But the bottom line is, he's got heart problems as hard as wounded. He's poor, he's needy, and when your heart goes bad, it starts murmuring, his murmuring, and he's angry. And then notice, it's almost like he's describing someone who's depressed.
Verse 23. I'm gone like a shadow when it lengthens. In other words, weight loss if you've ever met someone that needs to lose weight, depress people many times are losing weight. I'm shaking like a locusts. My knees are weak through fantasy. My flesh is feeble for lack of fatness, and I become a reproach to them.
When they look at me they shake their heads helped me hold Lord my God saved me. According to your Mercy. And then the last several verses. So how God did this or what would happen when God did this? When he came out of this depression, this anger induced bitterness induced the president, what is he going to look like? What what's going to be said?
They will know that your hand you Lord, have done it. In other words saved him. Let them curse, but you bless when they rise, let them be a saint, but let your servant rejoice. He wants to come back to that time of rejoicing. My accusers be clothed with shame and let them cover themselves with their own disgrace. I will greatly praise the Lord with my voice.
I will praise Him among the multitude, so he's now no longer socially isolated. He's praising God himself. He's praising among the multitude, for he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those who condemn. In other words, he's handed that all over the poor and needy to God. He's going to say, I'm not going to get angry anymore. I'm going to let you handle it as well.
So I don't know What you got out of the song but the song is showing how to offer those sacrifices of righteous righteousness and how to have gladness like it says in Psalm verse four verse. The last verses you have put gladness in my heart. And and then we're saying I will lie down in peace and sleep. For you alone make me dwell in safety.
