Hello, good afternoon. Good morning. Good day and welcome to another lesson here and how to play the sax. I have a question for you. How are you today? How are you feeling?
I am feeling happy. Now there is a clue. Happy. I have my happy badge. Do you have a heavy bag? Do you have a heavy smile?
Today? We are happy. I'm happy. You're happy. We are all happy. The world is good.
And we are going to learn Pharrell Williams song happy cause I'm happy up along and I don't know the words cuz I play the sax. So yeah, whatever, you know, we we know the tune, cause I'm happy, etcetera, etcetera. We will learn that song today. So, we will play along with the song. I'll put a YouTube link somewhere here. You can get this song on YouTube.
It is 10 gazillion views. on YouTube, you'll find it really easy, but I'll put a link so Happy by Pharrell Williams. How does it go? Firstly, we will do just a little bit in the chorus. Okay, just a little bit in the chorus. There's a few bits and bobs, and there's a chorus and there's a verse and we'll do a couple of little things in amongst that song and we will play along with Pharaoh.
Pharaoh can be here today. He sends his apologies, but we will play along with him via YouTube. Okay, how do we start the chorus? Let's start with the course. So the words the lyrics, they go, cuz I'm happy. And then there's a bit of stuff.
So it's pretty easy, cause I'm happy. All right, we can do that. We have the technology. So how does it go? It goes like this. Pretty easy.
Okay, we'll play that one more time. How do we play that one more time? It's pretty easy. We start on an A, because I'm with a C, happy with the D. Okay, so we're going a C, dd a C DD, right? Like this. Can you do that?
Let's try that nice and slowly cause I'm happy. I see. dd. Let's try. One. Nice and slow.
One, two. Ready? now. Once more let's do that. I see Didi lesson slow 1234 now Cool, it's very easy. Let's speed it up a little bit.
Cars. I'm happy 1234 Now again, two cars. I'm happy 123 now. All right, cool. We've got that first little bit. Now the secret is that with the cars I'm happy, we're gonna hold that happy.
Hold the P and happy, right, cuz. Happy. All right, let's try that 123 now. Good. Hold the peppy one again two, three now Excellent. Now in the chorus, there's actually a little bit of singing and dancing and, and the and the band and the backing vocals in particular, do a little bit of kind of nice holding long notes.
So we will do those long notes to Okay, so we've got the cars, I'm happy, and then we'll go down a note. II hold that note, and then we'll go back up again. So like this cars, happy e car cause I'm happy he, right. Let's try that. So we know the cause I'm happy. A C DD and then we'll go down to the C. play another see and hold it.
Then we'll go back to the day. All right. Like this 123 got the idea you try with me now. Okay, so we got cars I'm happy. I say DD C, C, D, and again, a C DD C, C, D. Let's try that. We'll try twice.
I'll try and keep a bit of a beat so you can hear it or see it or something. One to pay now Did for them? How'd you go? Did you keep up? I'm pretty sure you did. It's fairly easy.
Sounds more impressive when you listen to the whole band, but for us, it's actually quite easy. So maybe what we can do is we can play along. I will press play. Here's one I prepared earlier. I'll press play. And we'll do that.
Are you ready? Let's have a go. Here we go. It's starting. So there's a verse first, but we'll just join in The course will just listen we'll have a group will be on. Yep.
I remember when the chorus comes up, we got a C, D. All right, ready? You're ready one to one. So all right, nice. How'd you go It comes in a little bit quickly, doesn't it? And I tried to give a bit of accounting One, two One Two cars on happy. Yep.
So I'll try that counting again. 1212 cars on happy. Let's try that. Let's play it without feral. Ready? One, two, a one, two.
Cool. Let's try that. I'll press rewind the tape shows how old I am rewinding the tape. Not really rewinding a tape. I'm sliding a slider back on YouTube. But hey, Let us slide it back.
Right from the start. So here we go. Here's the start. We've got the verse at the start. We'll just have a jam just to listen. Little words.
Little Greg, because we're happy barrels happy. He's happy. I'm happy. You're happy. Ready? Now we're going to start studying one to one Joe.
All right. So then There's another verse happening. So we'll see what happens with the verse. And we will join in again with the second chorus. So what I've just done now is I've just stopped it. The next verse will happen, and we will join in with the next chorus.
Okay, let's keep doing that. So here is the second verse. second verse happens, but we will join in like we did before, on our A, C, D, C, C, D. All right, ready? Here we go. 1212 Now now here in this part of the song, and hopefully you've heard it before, but hearing this part of the song, there starts to be some some ladies backing vocalist lady scene in the background and they're going to go and Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy. Alright so that it's, again very simple data, data data data de it's only four notes.
It's only four notes, two times each note. So it goes like this. It's an A i, and then a gg. And then FF. Then we'll leave on the edge and do an E. So how does that go again, we go, I jG FF a. Let's try it together.
Let's try just a little bit slower. I GG ff F a. Let's try that together 123 slowly. Let's try that again. One, two, nice and slow. Or we could live on the edge, we could do it up the octave.
We can do it with our register key up to you, but let's try that with the register key one to the go. We'll try that again with the register key. Ready? One, two, still on a go. totally up to you with or without the register key. I jE jE FF A.
So, I will press play again. And we'll see if we can do a couple of those. All right, we'll join in. See how we go. Here we go. Ready?
Now, here we go. In here happy to two, three. And then the chorus. Sorry, I'm yelling and it's so loud here. I'm enjoying it. It's good to play it loud.
Inside plant loud, it's been one it's loud. So we just did that Happy, happy, happy, happy. And then we went back into the course again. So let's see what we can do. Okay, now what we're going to do is we'll do some of those happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, I GG FF E, we'll do a few of those, and then it leads into the chorus. So I'll try and count us into the chorus.
For the first bit, we'll play along with Pharaoh. And again, the YouTube I'll put a YouTube link somewhere here, so that you can find it or maybe there's a little PDF, actually, we'll put it in a little PDF download as well. So the YouTube link will be there. But in this case, I'll press play again and we'll do some Happy, happy, happy, happy and then it will lead into a course so happy he's a jG FF II and in the course, a C, D. c c d rights but we'll do happies first a jE jE FF E. One more. Here's the first one. Happy Happy ready here we go.
There we go. It's a rather infectious song and I really like it. And it makes me happy. It makes you happy. I'm pretty sure it's made a million gazillion people all over the world happy. I've got my happy badge.
I like this song. So what did I do at the end there? You might have noticed, I was playing along but then I put in a little harmony. So with the cars on happy what we were doing, we were going a C, D, C, C, D, but I changed. It changed it. It still fits You can do whatever you like there.
But what I did was instead of going D, C, C, D, what I did was I G, G A. So we got a C which is cause I'm a C, but the harmony, I G, G, A sounds like this. One, two, a one, two So which one do you like? It doesn't matter. You can play one, I can play one, I can play one and you can play one or you can mix it up. So So there's two of them in that little course because I'm happy or cuz I'm happy.
So the original one we did at the start or a possible Another option is so my suggestion to you is mix it up do either have or have those little risks in the course, in whenever you feel like those happy Happy, happy, happy, that fits on Whoever The best is to so you can do that pretty much whenever you like. Keep going, do it as many times as you like over the verses. Remember the courses, have some fun. If you feel that you want to change notes, live on the edge, change notes. You don't have to hold those long notes coz I'm happy. He you don't have to hold them when it was good for you.
If you want to wiggle your fingers, play some note, play some other notes. You can't go wrong. Play competently play it loudly play it happily. Go for it. But hopefully what I've given you here is just a little bit of a format of a structure to play along with Pharrell Williams Happy. I've enjoyed it.
I hope you've enjoyed it too. My name is Matthew and you are are awesome. And together I'm enjoying learning how to play the sax with you guys. So stay happy and I'll see you in the next lesson. Thanks
