In this section I will show you the basic things we need to know in order to start the work. I'm using the newest version of ZBrush. That is the 2019 point 1.2. And I'm set my UI to the standard one. So I hope that this looks like yours. When you open up ZBrush probably this window is open for you.
This is the lightbox. Here you can have your projects, tools, brushes, textures and anything, you can simply close it with the chroma key, or click on the lightbox button on the top left corner. Here on the middle, we have our workspace. If you draw here with the left click, you will have that really strange result. But we will don't need that. So if you draw something now, you can simply clear that with the Ctrl N. All right, on the right side we have our tools in zebra Rush tools are equal to 3d meshes.
So if you click on the simple brush on the right side, you will get access to all 3d meshes and 2.5 deep brushes. We will talk about only 3d meshes. Click on the 3d sphere. And you can drag that out and you have this really strange result because ZBrush is right now in a 2.5 D mode. Okay, now we clear our workspace with the ctrl m, and held over to the documents menu on the upper left side. Here you have this resolution section.
And here you can adjust the resolution of your workspace. Side note, it is a really useful feature in ZBrush. If you hover over your cursor on a button or any tool or function in ZBrush and hold down control you will have additional information of that that is really useful. As you can see here you can double your resolution We will need that. Maybe you get that others, but you can hit the Yes. And as you can see you have a much bigger space you can work on right now.
Now, we would like to work with our actual 3d model, all we need to do is to only drag out one sphere. And now hit the T button or here on the top you have that added button. Now you will be in edit mode. And now you can actually working on your 3d model. You can rotate it and anything. Okay, now it's time to talk about some navigation tools.
With the left click, you can rotate your model but if you want to move it around, or fouling with it, you need to hold down the Alt key and with the right click, you can move it around Okay, zooming is a bit tricky, but I will try to explain that easy. All we need to do is to hold down the Alt key to the right click, and now you can move around your mesh. But if you release only the Alt key, you will zooming with the right click. So try this again, you hold down the Alt key to use the right click. And now you can move really is the Alt key and you can zoom with the right click. Excellent.
Now we are going on and find out how we can actually sculpting on the 3d sphere. Here on the left side, you will have your brush palette. Here you can see all the brushes but ZBrush has during the course are we using only the standard brushes what ZBrush has originally, so you don't need to worry about that I'm using some unique or custom brushes during the course. Okay, now I tried to sculpt on this sphere with that standard brush. But ZBrush says that I need to make that sphere to a poly mass 3d. Okay to solve that problem, we need to go to the right of side and hit the make polymers 3d button.
As you can see, the tool name changed to polymer 3d sphere 3d. Now we can sculpting on the 3d model. We can undo our editing with the Ctrl Z or on the top left side, you have this undo slider. The slider is much longer and longer depends on how much editing you made on your 3d model. I tried to make some more editing and as you can see this slider will be longer and longer. Now we would like to change the material of our object Here on the material palette, you will see you have some basic materials, but during the course we will use the skin shades for but now we try that basic material.
Now if you choose the brush palette claybuildup brush for example, you can give these details to your 3d model. Okay now if you want to save my project we can simply press down the Ctrl S and ZBrush will be saved that project to the default project folder. If you save a project here, you will see that in the lightbox. Okay, the other thing what we will need during the course is go off to the left corner, the brush menu and you can see this little white arrow you can click on that and ZBrush will snaps that menu on To the left side of ZBrush workspace. Now here you can see the brushes that you use frequently and you don't need to open up the brush palette every time. As you can see, if you use the standard brush for example, it pulls out the geometry.
If you hold down the Alt key, this will invert your brush. It is really useful in many case Okay, now we will talk about another really useful thing. Go into the right side in the geometry menu and you can find that button that calls divide. With that you will have much more resolution divide cuts your polygons into four and as you can see on the top right side, you will have more and more active points. With that if you scouting on your 3d model, you will have much harder and the beautiful details. The other brush that we will use A lot called smooth brush.
If you sculpted on your 3d model, you can smooth that out. If you want to use that brush, you need to hold down shift and you will see on the left corner you have the smooth brush active. And yes you can see that is really smooths out the details what is crafted on your 3d model. It is really useful in many case. Now if you want to see your 3d models wireframe, all you need to do is to press down the Shift F buttons or on the right side, you have this job polyframe button. With that you will see the wireframe of your 3d model and you can see that how it changes as you sculpt on that.
Now I will show you how symmetry works in ZBrush. If you press down the x You will see that you have now two points on your geometry. And you can sculpt on that symmetrical. It is really useful if you have a character for example, in a symmetrical position, you can sculpt the two different parts on that. If you go up to the transform menu, you can see you can activate your symmetry with this button. And you can set your symmetry to the y axis or the Z or you can use radial symmetry, which is really fun and it has really beautiful results.
The other really useful thing what we will use a lot is masking. If you hold down the Control, you can see the mask pan active. With that you can masking out your 3d model and the mask place will be On sculptable. If you want to clear your mask, you can just hold down the Ctrl and drag a small rectangle on your workspace. If you want to invert your mask, you can simply hold down the Ctrl key and click on your workspace anywhere. If you go into the stroke menu under the mask pan, you can change the way you masking your surface.
For example, there is a lasso tool, which is really useful in many case Okay, during the course, we will work with a much simplified geometry. I will show you how you can simplify the geometry of the sphere. First thing you need to go into the initialized menu on the right side. And here you have many buttons q cube q sphere, q grid, or q cylinder right now We will need the cue sphere button. And as you can see, this sphere now has a much simpler version. If we divide that sphere, as you can see, it has much cleaner geometry, and we can handle it easier.
All right, that is for the basics. Now we can get into the actual work and make our first cartoon. See you in the next lecture.
