Lesson seven using this method. By working through this course you will have identified a method. First, identify the culture you need and why. Identify the behavior that will create the culture that you're looking for. Identify what you need to do to influence that behavior to get the behavior that you need to create the culture that you want. Ask yourself some questions to identify the culture you need, and why you need it.
Think about the specific behavior and ask yourself what will you be able to observe? What will people be doing and saying and what will they be doing when they think no one is watching. So what will the future be like when you've got this culture of continuous improvement? And finally, think about the things that you can do to improve or to change people's behavior to match the culture that you're looking for. So let's think about how we might do this following this course. Let's take a case study, you managed a small team, and you've been asked to save 10% on material waste.
You want to create a culture of continuous improvement and think this is a good reason to start. Firstly, identify the culture you need and why. Secondly, identify the behavior that will create the culture. And thirdly, identify what you need to do to influence that behavior. Well, we want a culture of continuous improvement to reduce the amount of material waste we generate. What are you looking for when you're looking for people identifying potential ways to reduce material waste, plus the other behaviors identified from this course.
What are you going to need to do to influence this behavior? Well, let's think about this. Before you go into the next slide, jot some of your thoughts down about how you might influence people to reduce material waste. So look at what you need to target and the sorts of actions we've taken in the previous lessons, and write down what you would do to get the behaviors you need. So here's our case study, you manage a small team, and you've been asked to save 10% on material waste. You want to create a culture of continuous improvement and think this is a good reason to start.
Here are some suggestions of mine but you may well have come up with some better ones. Firstly, communicate the reasons why you need to reduce the material waste, ie how much it's costing costing. Secondly, use or create some metrics to allow you to measure current performance. How much are you wasting per year, per month, per week, etc. Get your team together and ask them why they think so much material waste is being generated. Give all the team some basic lean awareness training the white belt stuff, create a mechanism for people to identify areas of possible improvement.
Train the team in the simple improvement process. Identify one or two quick wins from the team's ideas. Lead and coaches small team to go through the simple improvement process and make the improvement communicate the project to all what is being done. Why and then the results use visual stuff to demonstrate the end improvement but also how it was achieved. In other words, the process Start to include participation in ci as a subject for one to ones and team meetings.
