Lesson two, what behavior will you see in the new culture and the principles of influencing it? As we stated, culture is formed through people's behavior. And behavior is a function of your thinking. And if you're trying to change behavior and thinking, there's really three approaches that you can take, one is cognitive, the other is behaviorist. And the third is social. When taking a cognitive approach, really what you're trying to do is you're trying to change someone's thinking, change their reasoning, to think about something in a different way, and purposefully make choices about the behavior that they're going to make.

Second approach is to focus on what people do, not what they think. So hey, you're trying to create good habits through a system of reward or non reward. And the final one is social approaches, which is really acknowledging that people's behavior is wrapped up in what other people do and what other people are thinking. So it's thinking about how to leverage that, and change people's behavior through the social world that they exist in time for another exercise. Download the exercise sheet and jot down the answers to what will you be able to observe in this future state? So when you've got a culture of continuous improvement, what will you be seeing so this is really you imagining into the future and thinking about what is going to be like when you've got a culture of continuous improvement?

When you've got a culture of ci, what will you hear people saying and Interestingly, what will people do when they think that no one is watching? So these are three standard questions when you're trying to come up with the individual behaviors you'll be looking for. So it's really important to do this exercise, because I'm going to come up with some suggestions. But ultimately, it's the culture that you want. So you've got to think about what behaviors you want to be saying. Okay, so hopefully you've done that exercise.

And you've come up with a list of things that you want to see people doing and saying, once they are part of this culture of ci, so what will that be like? really imagine that? Here's some suggestions from me. One of the fundamental things is that I would expect in a culture of ci, to be able to go up to any member of the team, and for them to be able to explain to me something about continuous improvement theory, principles and processes. Now, I would expect the different people would have different levels of understanding and different abilities to articulate that. But I would expect some understanding about what i'm talking.

I'd be looking to see small and flexible improvement teams who are actively doing improvement projects. I'd expect to observe that small, incremental improvements to the way that things are done are happening. Next, expect to see all members of the workforce involved in coming up with ideas to improve. And I expect that a wide range of the workforce were actually involved in those projects themselves. And finally, I've been looking on the walls and other places to see some visual management of it. improvements and projects, and seeing the results of the savings being displayed on the wall.

So there's just some suggestions that I've been looking for. I'm really hoping that you've come up with a lot more. And you can apply the principles that you'll learn on this program to those behaviors as well to be able to start creating a culture that demonstrates those behaviors. So essentially, there's eight influencing factors that I'm going to use on this program, and that you can use to, here are some basic eight. Firstly, be clear about the rules and then expectations you've got from your team. So be willing to state your expectations.

Make sure they understand the personal benefit to themselves. And to their group, team, business tribe, if you like. show that there are some negative outcomes if they don't do the right thing. If you like. And create a situation where there are social expectations or norms that people are able to observe. Make sure that people believe it's possible to do the right thing.

And also, of course, make sure it actually is as easy as possible to do the right thing. And finally, think about habits and unconscious behaviors so you can create some kind of rituals around it. Things that happen regularly. Following suggestions, I'm going to go through with you now are based upon these factors.
