We're gonna talk about some common ailments and some easy remedies that you can make with stuff you have in your kitchen usually. And we're also going to go over to body we're type treatments that I think everybody should know, you should have them in your back pocket just in case, certain situations arise. And today we're going to make sourdough roti. So that it's so easy you guys will be doing this one for sure it's so easy. And I'm going to show you how to make that oil that I make. So that's what I'm hoping to accomplish today.
We'll see how far we get. So we've got four causes of inflammation and we need to kind of know what when inflammation is at the root of all illness and disease. And we kind of need to know what we're dealing with. So we can have an impact injury, right, you know, you stub your toe, you switch your ankle, those are kind of more of an external type injury that's happened to the body. We can have irritation due to food, allergies, IBS, that kind of internal inflammation. And then we can have infection and that's what we're going to be focusing on more today.
So this is where you've had something to eat that doesn't agree with you a bacterial imbalance, which most people are dealing with with leaky gut, and it just goes a little bit too far in one direction of imbalance and all of a sudden you've got a bunch of digestive issues and unhealthy my microbiome. So I mean, we've been talking about that for months and about how we need to rebuild our gut health. as a basis for for all total health and then we can have some imbalances with their hormonal and nutritional and this is where our homeopathy and natural empathy come into play. So when you're dealing with if you've gotten past the diet and your diets good for your condition and constitution and and things are working better, but you're still, something's still not right. That's when you need to get some testing done to see is is there some hormonal imbalance nutritional deficiencies that we need to really target?
And you can spend a lot of money at health food stores buy in stuff that really isn't targeting what you need. So it is very useful to at some point go to now we have a funky thing called functional medicine, where there are doctors and Alternative practitioners who are doing this type of testing for people and getting people back on track with very specific things. So that's definitely something to look into. If you're finding things aren't moving ahead for you, it's probably one of hormonal or nutritional. And so you know, what we're going to be talking about today, the remedies are going to be more for infection. So of course, we always want to look at prevention first, right?
And we're going into winter now. So it's a perfect timing to be talking about this because this is when people often get cold. People often get fallen spring colds because of an internal imbalance towards excess heat or excess mucus. In the fall, we can pick up heat over the summertime. And then if we don't do a cleanse again in the fall, and we And we've overdone it with the heating foods and, and out in the sun a lot then what can happen is our anything that's kind of sitting in the digestive tract just will kind of get caked kind of it's kind of baked on in there. So that's why the seasons are so that change is so beneficial if you use it with a with a cleanse so I've done a half assed three day cleanse so far this fall.
I've just been too busy. I've had three workshops that I've taught in the last month. So now that after this workshop, I think I'll take a week and do maybe a three to five day one. So again, hopefully you're all you all have children at home and this is a good time to start taking it. Sometimes it's to warming for some people in the summertime, but My hot and bothered friends will start shaking it in in the fall. So that's going to do help you along the way towards keeping your immune system boosted over the winter huge amounts of vitamin C, along with everything else that's in it.
Having that daily routine, usually in the wintertime, we might be wanting to go to bed a little bit earlier. And I've actually been sleeping in a little bit to like six because it's been so dark in the morning, I think one morning it was actually something that generally you want to be up before seven in the morning. You want to be in bed before 10 or 11. And then we want to have some immune boosters on hand. So if you feel you got the thing about treating things with herbs and nutrition is you really have to catch it early. It's much easier to stop a call That's just getting started than it is to deal with a full blown symptoms, right.
So in order to do that you have to be aware of what are your signs that you're getting cool, you might be getting sick. So for me, it's anytime that my energy kind of starts to drop. If I can't rest at that point, like go lay down for an hour. If I if I can't do that with my schedule, then I'll want to be taking an immune booster right away and I have some over here. This is what I like to have on hand. And it's not in the notes but you can buy this at the Indian or sorry at the Asian markets at on that one on Adelaide Street has a little pharmacy at the front.
Yun Chao is called they will doesn't matter How you say this, they're not going to know what you're saying because they just look at you and they can't understand. Generally. General Yeah. So you're gonna have to look for it on the shelf and say, sometimes if the person speaks English a bit better, you can say colds and flu and yeah, yeah, you could definitely do that on your phone before you leave. They don't always have it in and so sometimes when they do all by three or four, but if you take four or five of these tablets, and they're little round, they got a bit of a sugar coating on them. It's okay.
If you take five of these when you first start to feel unwell, the very very first signs even if I sneeze, it might be because I've breathed in a little irritant or something but I'm not going to take that chance I'm five of these and just boost my mn you would keep taking them up to three times a day if you were still feeling little under the weather. So this can really this is it's a wonderful blend of Chinese herbs and it really can do a number for boosting your immune system. I prefer blends of things that are traditional over this oregano oil, or these one or remedies that have a regular oil is very, very strong. It's very strong. It's more like an antibiotic really. And so it shouldn't be used.
People are taking it every day as a preventative to keep their immune boosters don't work that way anyway, you have to often when punkish would put people on a dose of herbs, it would be for like three, four weeks, maybe up to three months depending on what the person had and what the issue was. But you can't continually take an immune booster and then expect it to work. When you need immune boosting, your body will get used to it but to have some things on hand can make the difference between having one day where you might not feel 100% and having seven days where you're sick as a dog in bed right so the common cold some other remedies if you can't catch it early and you feel like you've started to get a full blown cool but sipping hot water every 10 to 15 minutes that's that's cleans out your your lymph system helped get mucus out of your system.
So that's a really good thing to do if you're if you've got a call or if you're feeling like you're fighting one, so cold water doesn't do the same thing. No and you would never have anything cold when you have a cold right? That would unless you're very if you're very feverish and and hot, then a cold drink may feel Good it needs to be a little careful with that because you take yourself into the shivers too, right? So generally we are going to be wanting to eat a lot of soups right chicken broth with some if you've if you're sick and you know it's gonna be a week. It's really good to have something like this in the freezer that you can just easily take out for yourself. So in LA and you're talking about cooking in batches.
You know if you made some kit Sheree made some chicken broth soup, have a couple of those in the freezers for yourself. And of course this this is a pretty common one gargling with saltwater and so that can help with throat issues of course, and gingers are wonderful mover stimulator gets junk out of the system gets coffee moving. So when you have a mucousy cool In that a very more coffee in balance and you really want to have things like ginger in there. So ginger tea like yeah, making make yourself. Oh, yeah, you can. Yeah.
So here's, I've just you can google online and get 100 different recipes for colds and flus. And I say, hey, if you've got a call, that's a great time to try some of these things out and see what works for you. I like to go with the most simple and straightforward ones because I might have a chance of remembering. So, so garlic paste, lemon juice, honey. And you're going to consume that as needed. You can mix that with some water.
But that combination of garlic, lemon and honey. So when you think about when we're thinking about things, either vertically, we always want to think about the quality of things right. So here, we have some Something that's very pungent. Matt is definitely garlic is a clean arounder especially when you haven't raw. So when you have a cold the raw garlic is definitely preferable to to cooked but both are good. And the lemon juice, it's our astringent again it's gonna pull mucus and gunk out of the system.
So these are both kind of cleansing in a way and then your honey is your humectant. It's moisturizes tissue that comes in contact to and then also has anti bacterial antifungal antiviral properties just like garlic and lemon juice, but without the honey in this, this is going to be too pungent and astringent in terms of taste. And it's going to be pretty drying right? Somewhat drying because pungent is heating and drying lemon juice. puckering, so that honeys in there for to also balance the remedy. Garlic cows more antibacterial, anti.
They're both good. I mean, you could put ginger in with this remedy to this little reason why he can't. So the simpler things are when you're sick and better, I think. Yeah. So another one is I was talking a bit earlier about how heating cinnamon is right. It's also very anti bacterial, antiviral.
So very simply a teaspoon of cinnamon in some hot water. That's going to start to clear up some congestion keep you warm. So when you're getting a cold, it's called a cold for a reason. We've talked. I've gone on and on about this before in the past, I think so you've allowed yourself to To reduce your immune, lower your immune system to a point where the unhealthy bacteria in your gut can be taken over by whatever you've come into contact with, or whatever's already in your gut that is going more out of balance. So again, it's the prevention, which is I would really focus on is keeping yourself warm all winter and not going out without a hat and a scarf on.
You can always take things off. And the other thing about cinnamon is it stimulates sweating. So any anything that's considered to warm you up is going to start to help you fight that cold so we know that fever serves a purpose. It raises our body temperature to a point where some fungal viral, bacterial a can't survive. So the part you know part of the a lot of these remedies are to heat you up as well. So we're generally between 98.4 99.5 people with thyroid issues will be taking their temperature in the morning before they get out of bed and it generally will be lower if they have some thyroid issues.
If you're getting over 108 not many people here probably have experienced that or let their kids get to you know, hundred and 405 gets pretty scary with kids. But definitely if you're approaching 108 I be going to hospital. So what I did with my daughter when she was little she had one after the chickenpox she had a she couldn't quite kick a cold. And so I call that hotline and that was very helpful save me from going to the eMERGE because I didn't know everything that I know now, I would have done different things. So when we have fever, we get some shivering, thirst, fatigue, aches, headache, reduced flow of urine, and concentrated urine so the urine will start to be a dark color. It's because you're getting dehydrated, right?
And so the things you want to be aware of increased heart beat and rapid breathing, excessive energy, any of these later. Symptoms here, that's starting to get to be cause for concern. You want to keep an eye on the person. You certainly don't want the person out exerting themselves that poor boy that died, supposedly from the flu who was in, dragged out to hockey competition sitting in a corner. Yeah, he died. He should have been in bed home in bed, or at one point he should have been taken to hospitals.
It was a few years ago, it was here it was here in London actually. And so people were pretty outraged at the parents and the coaches and but this is how far we've come from basic common sense, right? People don't have basic common sense around their bodies anymore because they think they can just take a pill and it's okay. Yeah, so it fevers there for a reason. And a lot of times we really don't want to shut it down. We want that fever to stay there to do its job.
You just but you want to be comfortable and you I mean, no one likes to go into hallucinations or anything like that. That can happen when you have a high fever. So if we can keep it manageable, then it actually is serving a purpose. saffron is a very heating. If you take too much saffron you can actually bleed to death. So it's a saffron is the little.
It's either pistol or steam and I don't know which one might be the pistol that is in a crocus flower, and it's harvested up in the mountains in Nepal and India. And so people are actually picking these little stamens like crocus flowers in the spring for a long time, but I never ever Yeah, ended up throwing it out eventually. Just a small little thing of it. But yeah, you have to be careful that you don't get imitation saffron. So there's some stuff it's basically just food coloring, coloring on some kind of threads or something. So the real saffron it will be in a small container and it will be a little bit pricey.
But you're not using much now hear you're using half a teaspoon. That's a fair bit of saffron really. So generally with a, there's a remedy for sleeping in either beta, which is warm milk with dates and cooked with dates. Well, if the milk causes mucus in the morning, then a few strands of saffron in that date knock will alleviate that mucus causing quality. So we're always looking at what are the qualities of this food and how can I balance it so it's not so much in that direction that maybe you don't want to go and right. So this is just saffron water.
And then using sip it while it's hot. And some of these can be this you can repeat all of these remedies as needed throughout the day. You don't want to do this probably more than three times in a day. You're gonna know you got to pay attention to what's going on for you So if you drink this, and you feel, oh, maybe your fever broke, it brought it to a level that was high enough it accomplished its purpose and then you start to cool down right? Or maybe you sweat a little more well you have while you're drinking this and then you start to feel better afterwards. But if you were to get uncomfortably hot after drinking this and you wouldn't drink it again, not for a while anyway, right.
And this was a real simple one. If you have basil leaves around, which sometimes I do in the wintertime, but this would be more something I would have in summer access to, but a teaspoon of basil leaves a teaspoon of ginger and you just crush it through this, the juice through sieve and add some honey and drink four to five times a day. So, again, both of these that all of these things are very antiviral antibacterial and, and will encourage sweating. And this was a weird one that I've not tried this one. I've not tried a lot of them because I don't tend to get cold. But these are, there's a really good website that I would recommend to everyone.
It's called home veda.com. And whenever you have any kind of symptom just go on there and Google what your symptom is and see what comes up and give them a try. Because I everyone that I have sent these things to have said Oh, that was really helpful that really worked. But five tablespoons of raisins and a cup of water for three hours. you grind it up and you add a teaspoon of lemon juice. I might have mentioned this before.
I have a feeling I did but my mom is 87 and my mom has no pain. In her body, I have a lot of pain in my body. But anyways, my mom heard from I think it was like a Polish or Italian lady at one point, to have to eat to have one tablespoon of golden raisins mixed with gin every night and at first I thought, oh my god, that's so weird. Anyway, she's been doing it for years. And finally I decided I looked it up online. I tell you this, no.
Okay, I looked it up. And it actually likes it actually says online that it's really good for arthritis. Okay, I did try it for a while, but I would, I would brush my teeth and I'm like, gosh, I forgot to take pills. You know, so I kind of stopped but I should I feel like I wish to try again. Yeah, and she just swears by it. And and yeah and online.
While you can't believe everything you see online, but but it said that, you know, it's it's, it's been I forget, it was a while ago that I looked that up. But you know, lots of people were saying yeah, it's good for arthritis. Well, if we think about that, if we think about that, all your vehicles You have sweet raisins, right? And which is anti Vata and gin which is heating and dispersing it. gin comes from the juniper berries, right? If you've ever eaten a juniper berry, it's like turpentine.
So it has that kind of cleaning out of your system. So I would think if you have deposits in joints and you had a Vata imbalance which if you have any kind of illness you're gonna have a lot to imbalance it Vata moves things in the body so it it's always going to be somewhat video aided in an illness. So yeah, yeah. And the properties of raisins. I mean, they cool fever right. So that that And so it's actually a little bit similar to this, though because the lemon juice is dispersing, so I could see where you know, arthritis is inflammation in the joints.
So you're basically calming fever with every night for years, but you can only have a little bit of chin. No. Oh, I feel like the drinking. Yeah. So when we look at headaches, many people suffer from headaches. We've got three kinds vascular attention and traction, inflammatory and vascular is your blood vessels, either constricting or throbbing, being too so I was mentioning my daughter who's pregnant is having some headaches.
So when you're pregnant, you have an increased blood flow, right? She's got tiny veins and tidiness everywhere. So so you know some throbbing happening. And so there's two different kinds of vascular headaches. There's the throbbing kind where the veins are expanded and too much blood flow. I'm just going through there.
Or there's the constricted, one where they're thin and not enough blood throes is going through and that's what's causing the headache. So, so sometimes caffeine works. She's at my daughter's actually been told to drink half a cup of coffee in the morning because coffee constricts your blood vessels, right? And it's D hydrating. So it's going to reduce the amount of flow in the blood and tension, muscular headaches. So a lot of people are doing this all the time when they talk, you know, or they're clenching their jaw all day long and they got headaches, right.
So trying to convince people that they are looking at what you're doing all day that's causing your headache trying to convince people that it can be something, something that simple. In our day and age of a drug for everything. Really. We have to kind of look at how we carry ourselves how we carry our body what we're exposed to all day. And so when we have inflammatory issues that are causing headaches, you're probably looking at something a little more, a little more serious. So that's why they say if your headaches continue for more than you know, a few days or you have a headache for more than three, five days that you should have it looked at and then we have different kinds of headaches, a sinus Of course in the sinus area.
If you've ever had a sinus infection that can be really nasty. There's a wonderful Chinese herbal for sinus infections called by an ER B and B phi y A and, and there was a time in my 30s when I was struggling with sinus infections pretty pretty regularly a couple times a year, and that that just knocked them out really quickly without all the side effects of the other kind of medications from over the counter that I might have had. And then of course I changed my diet too because that was the time I went to a naturopath around for that issue. You can have pain around the eye and certainly with all the computer stuff a lot of people do these days. And then right up to your, your migraine which are pretty debilitating. So there's a few points that are really helpful to know for migraines and headaches in general.
And one is, yeah, if you take your finger like this, and find this point here on the wrist, and usually you're just going to go in a clockwise motion for about two minutes on each point, and then this is a real common one that people will will do for headaches. And again, it takes a good two minutes to two and you don't want to rub it so hard that you cause a bruise or any pain there, right. There's also another one on the inside of the wrist here. So right kind of a long way that thumb is actually I will work both those points sometimes but and so you We really need to remember one of these to one on the nose and the back of the ear. If one doesn't work, then you can try another one. You know that that's kind of how I go about these things.
I try one remedy that doesn't work, try another one. But these are really helpful to know if you're out with someone they've got a headache, you say Oh, just give me your hand here and do that for them. These are another two other really good points right with the feet for headaches. And so some remedies so a couple watery 210 basil leaves, you pour the water over the basil leaves, let them steep and then you can just drink it with the leaves in there. If you want. You can take them out if you like.
So the basil works to lower the blood pressure so this would be best for one of those flub throbbing headaches, right? Where there's a lot of pressure going through. And this one has dry ginger powder. And I like it when recipes used to drive her because that's something you can keep on hand right? dry ginger powder, hot water to make a paste and you put that on your forehead. And then of course there are the Chinese Tiger bombs which are very helpful.
There's a white and a red. And the red is more heating. Often red things are and the white is a little more cooling. So if you have headache with fever, for instance, you'd probably want to go more with the white one. And when I use I use a bit of this in my Oh, you can just smell how that opens up your sinuses, pass it around. x word your kids children are gonna more suffer from your ex and adults but certainly earrings with adults often will be related to some sinus or dental issues, sore throat, that kind of thing.
And it's pressure in the middle ear and a caused by infection. So sometimes you know, you get some water in there or you and that starts to fester and you get some infections so that there's a few points for your eggs. And of course we want to know the difference between earache and an ear infection, right? So once it gets infected, it's gone to another level of imbalance and garlic drops are great. Great for that. There's two points around the ankle as well, these two here, and you don't use those during pregnancy.
We know in Thai massage, you don't press on that if you have a pregnant woman because it can stimulate labor. So if you're in labor, and it's not going very well, you can stimulate those points and get things moving. But that's also helpful for ear aches, and of course, back in the neck, so any tension in the neck and shoulders right, and we know from breathing, if someone's breathing up here, there's there's going to be tension in the neck and shoulders. And so any of these points, if you take anyone with a headache and just start massaging their head, it's probably going to help unless it's really one of those throbbing ones that pressure just is going to aggravate it. So then I would tend to put some something cooling on the forehead in the neck. And so the garlic juice extract of garlic is excellent for ear infections and ear aches you just put a couple drops.
So you just squeeze in the fresh garlic choose antioxidant, anti microbial antiviral, antifungal, it's got everything. Yeah. Yeah. And you just lay like that and you might put a little something warm on it if you want. If you're feeling like it's an earache due to cold then for sure you want to put warm on it. So even being out in the wintertime without a hat and cold when, right you're you're at risk for earache.
So with that, then we can use our gi a tablespoon a GI a tablespoon of licorice powder. And then you make a paste and you apply that to your outer ear. So you can just you can put it anywhere that's kind of close and it will start to seep in, right and that Crush powders in the anti inflammatory and constipation. So really with constipation, we want to get to the root of the issue which is always partly going to be based in diet. So we want more fiber, more things that kind of push the matter through the colon, or make sure that we're not dehydrated and the body likes regularity. So eating times if they're all over the place, it's going to be hard to cure constipation if it's chronic.
There we go gas bloating, abdominal cramps coding on the tongue. So in the morning when you wake up, if you look at your tongue, there should be a light white coating but not a real thick heavy coating. If there is then you know you have excess armor in your system, right. And constipation is a serious issue. should not be let go. Because it can lead to arthritis, cataracts, rheumatism, high blood pressure appendicitis, so any of those illnesses that are caused by stagnation and congestion.
And so when the eyes start to go, you know that the liver may be congested eyes and liver being very connected. And you know, arthritis, rheumatism, a lot of that gunk that's in the joints that's being deposited is because the system's not dealing with waste through the colon very well, right. And so we want to get a squatty potty because we were not meant to sit on a throne and go to the bathroom. So it's that Pew burger. I'm not going to remember the name of liquid And that closes off the colon. Um, oh, it's in the back of my mind anyway, that will only relieve that kink in the colon when we're in the squat.
So I highly recommend the squatty potty. It's not a true squat. If you've ever really squatted to go, it's a little bit different, but that that alone can cheer a lot of issues with constipation, because we're working against whether our body was meant to do like Do we have to buy something to adopt? Some under my toilet so the squatty potty it's a it's a thing for your feet to your feet are lifted. Yep, yep. Yep, yeah, you want so I Yeah, I do.
Ideally, we're going like this right? And this is This is great for peeing, especially for women. Because you've got that pressure of your thighs against your bladder, and you have your pelvic floor is totally relaxed, right? It's really hard to tense your pelvic floor in a squat. So that pressure along with being very relaxed, which most women aren't, most women will even sit on the toilet with tension in their feet. So that is going to track the muscles around the bladder and cause problems with eliminating so women end up with residual in the bladder, they get bladder infections, all that kind of thing can come from that.
So constipation lukewarm water, half a lemon, half a teaspoon of salt. This is a remedy that saved a friend of mine from going to the emerge with constipation. So she is a nurse so she knew how bad had gotten. I think she did this one and the next one to warm water half a teaspoon fennel seed powder and mix and drink before bed. And you can also eat an orange in the evening or in the morning. Oranges for some reasons stimulate the bowel to evacuate.
And then the other thing that I came across in doing a bit of research on constipation is this wacky, I'll send you a link and if anyone has an opportunity to try it, try it. It's a breathing exercise where you're sitting on the toilet, and you inhale and you exhale and then you hold your breath for as long as it's comfortable. And then you just take small little breaths. So after after you've held your breath, and then you have to breathe again. You don't allow yourself to totally breathe in a full breath. Just little ones.
They say that that is going to decrease the oxygen in your system and elevate your co2. And that will then trigger. No, give it a try. diarrhea. Do you want to look for blood in the stool with diarrhea, diarrhea can be a sign of irritation in the gut. Too much raw foods can cause diarrhea.
So some of these raw food people are running back and forth to the toilet like five, six times a day. They think they're cleansing. And they are maybe much to their detriment. But so lemon juice ginger paste black pepper, so that she remedy for diarrhea has a contracting effect on On a tonifying effect on the intestinal tract so again we have a stringent of a lemon juice pungent and the drawing of black pepper, which acts to help to dry out the looseness of the stools equal amounts of cumin and fennel ground up in and four teaspoons of that in a cup of yogurt twice a day. So that's basically a bit of a writer which is what we're I have some yogurt on the side of our bean dish today and there's definitely cumin and fennel in there, but I just put, you know, cumin, coriander, fennel, but if anyone had diarrhea, it would be easy to switch that up.
