The project should be well aligned with business goals and results. A project that is not aligned with the business goals has a tendency to lose management attention in the long run. On the other hand, if the project is well aligned, it will gain attention required focus and buying from the senior management, leading to a higher rate of success. The project should preferably address only one metric, a project that addresses one metric has a higher probability to being successful, then the project that addresses multiple matrix there should be one primary metric impact on other matrix is understandable and inevitable. It is important for us to define this primary metric and keep the other matrix honest. For example, we do not encourage one project to have a goal of improving cycle time, and a goal of improving customer satisfaction scores simultaneously.
The practice is to keep one goal, let's say cycle time improvement, keeping a check on the other matrix of the business process such as customer satisfaction scores. So, in this case, the primary metric is cycle time, and the secondary metric is customer satisfaction.
