So in this video, I wanted to talk about something called backlinks. This is kind of an advanced topic and I don't want to get too too deep into it. Depending on how much you've done research for yourself. You may have some understanding what backlinks are. I just did a quick Google search. What are backlinks just to show you guys, they come back with a definition, an incoming hyperlink from one web page to another website.
The more backlinks you have pointing to your site, the more popular it would be there. So when it comes to backlinking, an example could be that you have a business listing over on the local Chamber of Commerce for your business, that backlink is basically going to provide a little bit of power to you. The same with building out all those business listing websites. They do also have a tag that Google can use, they have it it's called the nofollow or the do follow backlink. So a nofollow really means that it's not really passing any power to you. It's not passing any relevant power.
So a chamber of commerc link might very well be a nofollow link. But Google still will look at those nofollow links, even though it's not passing some of the power, it's still going to give you a little bit of a boost and relevancy and having more and more of these types of links. Just kind of all over the place is really going to help you out quite a bit. A good way to do this, I'm actually going to go to let's see, actually, I thought I'd show you this first. This is an example. Brian Dean runs this website called backlinko.
And here's an article fairly recent that he updated 17 untapped backlink sources. So an example here is he submitted some stuff to an audio sharing site and then in that audio sharing site, he was able to get a link back to his website. He found some top food blogs best fitness blogs, getting reviews. Getting testimonials There's all kinds of different things in here, getting mentions, you can use some of these tools, he talks about fine who's mentioning you. There's some free directories, like so much directory world, all the websites, I mean, here's some, you could literally just go on right now and submit your website, and it's completely free. And some of those things are going to help you herro, which is help a reporter out, you can get an account on there, maybe find some people who are interested in doing that, and some of the stuff starts to get really advanced.
Generally, what you're gonna find for a small business, you're not going to need a ton of backlinks. You really just, it's not going to be a huge thing that you're going to need. But I really wanted to cover it in this course and just kind of explain what it is. If you're finding that, let's say you've optimized this page, maybe it's been shared several times on Facebook and Google and Twitter, and you just completely don't understand why it's not outranking a competitor, there's a pretty good chance maybe that article has some links going to it or the site overall has some authority. And age, the competitor just that would be a good reason why they're ahead of you in the rankings. And that would be a point where maybe you should look into this.
There are lots of tools that you can use to kind of look at backlinks. And I'm not going to dive into it. I could literally make an entire course that just talks about backlinks and methods and all kinds of different things you could do to acquire backlinks. It's really just a whole other subset of SEO and it's what really is considered off page SEO. It's beyond creating the pages on your website and doing the basic things you need in order to rank. What you're really going to find though, like I said is that if you're going after the service terms, you're not going to have as much of an issue
