Let's first look at how you can approach this exercise. There are three primary questions that need to be answered. One, what are the new rules in the future organization? And what are they expected to achieve? Do which of these roles are priority customer delivery roles? Three, what competencies are required by each of these roles to achieve their targeted performance?
While the questions may seem straightforward, do not the following. You will need to identify the right mix of people, including transformation and business leaders and subject matter experts to conduct this exercise. Since this is a future state being discussed, do not expect ready answers. Use a facilitative approach to extract information even with the right group, you may not receive 100% information, as the true nature of the transformation will continue to evolve back in time for an iterative process to refine the framework. And here is some pre work that you should complete before kicking off the role analysis and competency mapping exercise. equip yourself with a fair understanding of the transformation goals and how it delivers value to customers.
This can be easily done by referring to the shared transformation collaterals. All by having a chat with the business leader you may have quick access to. Next, you must gain sponsorship for the exercise from the digital transformation leadership by communicating its purpose and importance and seeking business group nominations. Look up a sample communication that I've included as an downloadable resource. Once you've checked off these two items, schedule meetings with each business group to formally kick off the role analysis and competency mapping exercise.
