Hello, thank you so much for taking my calls running a web design business. I really am grateful because setting up a web design business from home was the best thing I ever did. And I'm grateful for it. Now many people might think that running your own business means working every hour that God sends and being tied to your computer. Well, sometimes I'm afraid it does mean that. But it also means a great deal more.
When you work from home, you're free to do what you want when you want. And being an entrepreneur frees your mind. When you're a small part of a big company. There's tendency to pass off difficult work to other people, and you never really learn how to do a job from beginning to end. Whereas when you're running your own business, you have to think creatively problems. And this can be very liberating.
And let's not forget, there's a freedom of location as well. So when you're running your own web design business, you can work from anywhere, all you need is a internet connection and a laptop. But when you set up your own business, you're the boss, it means nobody can look over your shoulder and complain about what you're doing. And I'm 10 times better designer now than I was when I worked for other people. In fact, when I worked for other people, I don't think I had a lot of confidence to take on large design jobs. But I really have a lot of confidence in my ability now as I've run a web design business for a number of years.
And I would say the two most important things that have helped me in the last few years have been one the blog and to the relationships. So firstly, blogging every week on Rob coven.com from 2005 helped me set up my business in late 2006, early 2007. I started Working on my own from 2006. But then I was freelancing at other companies at the time. And it took me another two years or so until 2009 when I finally gave up on the freelancing at other companies and continue to work on my own home, on my own business, and I've done that ever since. And that was all really from blogging because I got all my clients from the blog initially.
But also, the second thing is the value of long term business relationships and going to meetups, going to meetings, going to events, and meeting people face to face. And of course, I have a portfolio I have testimonials, and an about page. But the website and the blog is all important because it does attract people from Google as well as from other places, social shares, etc. So, as you might know, I am passionate about running my own business and working for myself, because after working for other people, which I found very difficult and really quite depressing. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity. And the career that I've had.
I think it's put me in a better and more secure position for the future. When you're constantly required to provide the most up to date marketing solutions by a dynamic client base as I am, you naturally develop very useful skills and expertise, so I feel that I'm better informed and able to deliver a more successful project than I was even a couple of years ago, the experience of running your own web design business is so useful for your own skill set. I believe anyone can do it. But you have to be able to provide premium services, and really go all out to have a great relationship with your clients. And you can do this without a huge loan from the bank. You can start in your spare time, and you can start home.
