Hello and welcome to lecture 10 have become an author self publish your books worldwide. I am David Russian was lecture 10 covers and uploaded. Until now we were only discussing the interior of the book. Now we shall talk about the covers for the books, you will need two types of covers to publish one is a paperback cover and the second one is the ebook cover and each of them has certain specifications. Let us first look at the paperback cover. For this, you will need to download a custom cover template for your exact book size and the exact number of pages in your book.

For example, let us assume that your book is five by eight size and has 200 pages. So you will need to create download a custom cover template for this from this site. Now let us go to this site. This is the site you have to choose The trim size This is from Amazon, they will allow you to create a custom cover template. Note that this is not real. This is not a full cover but this is only a template enter the page count selected paper as cream color cream color is better for your eyes.

Download the cover template. Now Amazon will generate a cover template download this template now this folder has two files. We will open the first file both are the same, but I will just open the PDF file. Now this is the paperback book cover template that Amazon is generated for your five by eight inch book that contains 200 pages. So what Amazon has done is they have calculated a spine width of half For the green paper of 200 pages that you have used. Now if you look at the properties of this file this is the page size for the entire PDF size is 10.75 by 8.25.

I'll explain why it is slightly bigger than five by what Amazon does is they expect you to put a point 125 inch bleed on all the four sides of the book book cover. So, when you put point 125 on all the four sides, this is the size that you will get 10.75 by 8.25 for example 10.75 with this five inch back cover, five inch front cover, point five inch spine and point one to five on either side, left and right. So if you add all this you will get 10.75 similarly For the vertical size, vertical size is eight inch at point 125 at the top point 125 at the bottom you will get 8.25. So you will have to use this template to create a cover for your book. Now, let us go back to the presentation. Now there are two ways to create your cover.

One is you can use the Amazon cover creator for this you don't need to download any template Amazon will generate a template and create a cover for you. But the only problem is they have a limited number of cover designs and you will have to choose only one among them. If you're okay with that, you can go with that. Or if you're not happy with them as uncovers, you can create a cover yourself using some graphic designers know where to find the graphic designers. You can go to a site like fiverr.com where there are dozens of graphic designers As freelancers who will create a book cover for you for something as low cost as $10, so you can contact them and create a cover created for you. For them to create a cover, you will have to give them two files.

One is the PDF to download it. And the second one is EULA, you can just give a specification saying that I need a JPEG file 4600 by 2400 pixels tall. And then they will create a cover for you and charge you some fee which you can pay and then they will probably send you a PDF file at a JPG file because these are the only two files that Amazon will accept. So you don't have to worry about the hassles of creating a cover or learning Photoshop or Corel Draw and so on. If you spend some 20 to $30 you can have a professional cover create or if you're happy with Amazon, you don't have to spend over that. Now finally, you should have the following five files to upload on Amazon.

The paperback interior in PDF format, the paperback cover in PDF format, the Kindle interior in kpf format, the Kindle cover in JPG format, you can use the same cover for Smashwords also the Smashwords interior in docx format. I will show you the files that I have these are device letter exam but this is my interior for my book. Let me open that. See the PDF file which you see the PDF file of my interior. Now let me show you the cover for this. This is the cover for my book.

This is a In a PDF file, and I look at this properties of this, this shows 10.46 by 8.25. This is based on the calculation for the number of pages in this book. You also note that there is no spine in this book, even though there is a spine there is no spine texture, this the reason for this it is a it's a very thin book. So if a book is less than hundred pages, normally you can, you cannot put a spine because the font will be too small, but that's okay. If your book is small, you don't have to have a spine text. The next one is the copy of this is the copy of file that we created using the Amazon Kindle create for this book.

And this is the cover for the copier file. This is a single JPG file. If you look at the properties of this It shows is thousand 500 by 2400 size dimensions 1500 by 2400 pixels. It's about 457 kb. And the next file is the Smashwords interior. This is a plain Word file that has hyperlinks and bookmarks, no page numbers or any other word formatting.

So once you have all these five files, you can start uploading them on Amazon and Smashwords. Now Now this is the KDP dashboard. This is where you upload the paperback and the ebook for Amazon. Now let us go to that site. Now once you create a user ad on KDP site You will get a dashboard like this. Now, whenever you want to create a new book, you have to choose these two options.

There is a Kindle ebook, there's a paperback. If you click the Kindle ebook. It will open the dashboard for that. Now this is where you fill the details. This is for the Kindle ebook. So enter the book title, the subtitle, the series, the edition number, your author If you have any other contributors, you can add them, they can give a short description for your book, you can tell that you have the copyright for this book, and you can enter the keywords.

Here you can select the categories for your book and the age if you have any age rate, and then if you continue, it will prompt you to upload these two files. I'm not going to go to that state because have not entered any data. It will prompt you to enter this file, the cover page and the interior. Similarly, you can go back to the paperback dashboard. Let's click on the paperback dashboard. It will open a similar screen.

The book title, subtitle series, edition number, alternate contributors book description, publishing rights, keywords, categories, and one more area where it asks you whether it has any adult content. Then if you save and continue you it will prompt you to enter the interior in PDF format and the full cover in PDF format. One more thing what Amazon does is every paperback book should have an ISP number. This is a unique number for every paperback book. There are two ways today you can either use the Amazon supplied ISP which is free or if you have purchased an ISP and for your book from the ISP and authority, then you can upload that number. But as a beginner, I suggest you use Amazon or ESPN, just to see how your book journey goes.

So, once you upload this, they will review your book. And we'll get back to you after a couple of days. Now before that let us go to the third option, the Smashwords option. This is the Smashwords dashboard. So you click on Publish here again, you need to create a user ID and login. click on publish, it will open the screen there you enter a title.

And you can set it book description there is a short description and a long description. Select the language you can also make the book free here but on Amazon, you cannot make a book free it has to be at least 99 cents. And you can give some 20% of the book free for readers to read your book. And you can select the primary and the secondary category. And you can enter the text tags or at basically the keywords and this is where you upload the cover image. This is where you upload the word file.

The cover image, you can use the same Amazon cover image of thousand 600 by 2400 pixels for up Smashwords also they will accept that and this is the word for you cannot upload a PDF file without to upload only the world file that we have here. I did, you can select the ebook types that you want. They offer EPUB Kindle format, PDF format, Sony reader format, palm docx format and even a plain text but I recommend that you uncheck the plain text because you don't want somebody to copy your file if it is in plain text format, agree and you can publish once that is done. Now after a couple of days if everything is fine, you will get an approved For your Kindle e book this book is called e mail will be like this your book is now available in the Kindle Store congratulations your book never touched me God is now available for purchase on the Kindle Store said enrolled in KDP Select so and then there will be a similar model for Amazon paperback says your paperback book is now available on the Amazon store.

Congratulations paperback is available and this is the link for this. And similarly for Smashwords you will get another May. It says Smashwords. This is the basically this is the mail that you get as soon as you upload the book on Smashwords. They will convert it into various formats and within our vector and then it will tell you whether it is passed or not. If it has passed, then you have to wait for a couple of more days.

Then after that you will get one more email saying that Smashwords premium catalog accepted. This means that your book is now be available on sites like Apple If you get all these four males, that means you are now a published author. Congratulations. This completes your journey of becoming a published author of your first book, but your journey does not end you will have to write many more books. So I recommend you write at least two books a year, two small books a year, or maybe one book a year, and continue our journey. Now some recommended reading.

So this I recommend these two books, chicken soup for the writer soul. One and two in the second one is the inspiration for writers. They contain many short stories of the good and bad journeys that authors are faced in publishing their book. And this is one website which I recommend that you read. It has a lot of small tips on how to publish the do's and don'ts of publishing on how to market your book and others. And this site has a bunch of podcasts that you can listen.
