Objective
At the end of the General Nursing Education Programme, the students should be able to:
- Utilize relevant knowledge in providing comprehensive nursing care to the individual, family, and community.
- Function independently and in collaboration with other members of the heart team and related sectors in the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
- Apply management principles in the optimum utilization of human and material resources for health care service delivery.
- Contribute to research by conducting and participating in projects and implementing findings geared towards improving healthcare services and nursing education.
- Counsel clients on family planning services and make referrals when/where necessary.
- Provide an atmosphere of trust, which allows for meeting the clients'/patients' basic emotional needs.
- Utilize the knowledge and skills of education, Information, and Communication Technology (ICT) in improving health care services.
Competencies
The graduate of the General. The nursing program is expected to acquire the ability to:
- Identify the health needs of individuals of all ages and in all settings.
- Utilize the nursing, process and other tools of nursing within the ambits of their practice to identify and respond to individuals and groups to assist them adapt to changing health needs.
- Implement nursing care proficiently and effectively for the safety of the patient.
- Develop strategies for Health Education to meet the health needs of client/patient, family, and the community.
- Initiate and carry out research to improve evidence-based practices to meet the health needs of the people and advance the frontiers of knowledge.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission into the General Nursing Education must possess the West African Schools Certificate (WASC) or its equivalent (Senior secondary school Certificate (5SCE) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) with a minimum of five subjects at credit level including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings.

Program Description
The General Nursing Education shall be a 3 calendar year (6 semesters) program of study in this institution. Admission shall be in October of every year.

Methods of Evalution
Assessment of the student shall consist of the following:
- Continuous Assessment(CA) = 25%
- 75% Compulsory Attendance = 5%
- End of Semester Examination Total = 70%

- Pre-Professional Examination (Hospital Final) = 100%
- Professional Examination for General Nurses = 100%
Scheme of Examination
The examination for the General Nursing Programme shall consist of two parts:
- School Examinations
- Professional Qualifying Examination for General Nurses
School Examinations
These shall consist of:
Continuous Assessment (CA)
- This shall constitute 30% of the total marks obtainable for the student in each course at the end of each semester.
- The Continuous Assessment shall be generated from the 'following; Class tests, assignments, quizzes, presentations, and class attendance.
End of Semester Examination:
- This shall constitute 70% of the total marks obtained by the student in each course at the end of each semester.
- The pass mark for each course shall be 50%. The student shall be allowed to re-sit failed courses.
- A maximum of three courses shall be allowed for re-sit per semester.
- The score for a re-sit course shall not exceed the pass level which is 50%.
- Failure in four courses and above at the end of the Preliminary Training Session (PTS) shad earn the student withdrawal from the school. Subsequently, if a student has a GP below 1 he/she shall withdraw.
- After a successful PTS examination if a student fails a re?-sit examination, the student will repeat the year of study.
- If a student fails a Pre-Professional re-sit Examination {Hospital Final), the student shall join the next class.
- Pre-Professional Examination (Hospital Final) shall be in two parts:
- Written Examination
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
Written Examination
- Paper I: Basic Nursing Care - A three-hour paper of 100 Multiple-Choice and 3 Essay questions, covering all aspects of pursuing care including; Anatomy and Physiology, Medical-Surgical Nursing, I, II, III, Primary Health Care, Foundation of Nursing I and II, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacology, Social and Behavioural Change Communication, Principles, and Practice of Management, etc.
- Paper 11: Advanced Nursing Care - A three-hour paper of 100 Multiple-Choice and 3 Essay questions,-covering all aspects of nursing care including Anatomy and Physiology, Medical-Surgical Nursing IV, V, Community Health Nursing, Mental Health nursing reproductive Health, Research and Statistics, Emergency, Nursing Jurisprudence and Disasters Nursing, etc.
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
This shall consist of:
- 6 question' stations;
- 6 procedure stations covering all 'aspects of nursing care (5 minutes per station).
