In this ab initio course, the properties of the atmosphere and fundamental mechanics are explained. Aspects of airplane stability and control are also addressed. The course includes theory and applied knowledge for students wishing to prepare for a future career as aircraft pilots, aircraft designers, aircraft maintenance technicians, and aviation enthusiasts that wish to gain an understanding of airplane flight principles. 

Course Contents

• Week 1: Properties of the atmosphere; Air density; Mechanics theory; Forces acting on the aircraft (mass, thrust, lift, drag); Bernoulli’s equation; Airspeed indicator.
• Week 2: Static and dynamic stability; Control in pitch, roll, and yaw.
• Week 3: Mass balance and aerodynamic balance of flying controls; Trimming controls; Flaps, slats, slots, and air brakes.
• Week 4: Level flight, gliding, and landing.
