To get at the roots of oppression, in its various forms, including individual and systemic marginalization, discrimination, exploitation, and bullying we need to encourage reflection on our lived experience and what we learned from that experience. Including how we learned biases and values that support oppression. Often these unconscious biases and discriminatory attitudes are learned as children from interactions with others in our family and community, as well as media. Using this tool can encourage reflection on our experiences and how they formed our views and values. A better understanding of how we acquire our attitudes as well as internalized oppression from our social environment and lived experience can set the stage for making changes. We can come to see that our beliefs and attitudes about others are just thoughts and opinions that are not necessarily true. And then we can more consciously choose what we believe and value.
