About the Product

The activities and investigations in English: The First 1,000 Words are based on the 1000 most frequently used word forms in British English, based on 29 works of literature by 18 widely-read authors (4.6 million words) and Rosengren's modified frequency, with case-equated matching.

Learning of the first 1,000 words cannot be restricted to any particular group because people of all ages will have many and various reasons for improving their English language skills. That being said, as well as young children in English-speaking communities who are learning to communicate, there are three main groups who can benefit from English: The First 1,000 Words activities:

  • Those who enjoy the English language – just for the challenge of achievement
  • Those who need English language skills because it is the language of international business and communication
  • Those who need English language proficiencies to open up study opportunities in western countries, or as a prerequisite for residency.

The use of English as an international language continues to expand.

  • More than 1 billion people are learning English for career, study,  or travel.
  • At least 75% of all communication is written in English.
  • More than 500,000 International English Language Testing  System (IELTS) tests are taken every year.
  • More than 4.5 million sit the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) annually.

To communicate effectively in English, or in any other language, we all need to develop the input skills of listening and reading in conjunction with the output skills of speaking and writing. If these skills are not developed in parallel, communication difficulties occur. It would be untrue for you to suggest that you do not know anything about the English language as it contains many words that you will already know.

In Italian, you can turn on your computer, and in Portuguese, you move the mouse, in Russian you connect to the Интернет (exact transliteration of the Internet, and in Japanese you check your me-ru or mail.

The Czech word robot is used in most languages, Italian foods like pizza, pasta, gnocchi, or words native to a country like piranhas in Brazil and kangaroos in Australia, are just a few of the many examples.

A working English vocabulary uses from 600 to 2,000 of the most common words over and over again. Anyone with a knowledge of these words should be able to read, hear, write, or speak and communicate on a wide range of subjects.

When Robert Palmer began his training at Ballarat Teachers’ College in the 1960’s his experiences had been as a receiver of education, rather than an encourager of thinking. The political climate at the time was all about ‘individual differences’ and ‘thematic studies’, but very few knew what these really meant. Robert certainly didn’t. While...
