In addition to dance therapy... read more We started creating an evidence-based dance therapy about 10 years ago. Since then we have worked with a number of different mental health providers and dance instructors to create the Healing Movement Workshop. In addition to dance therapy, we decided to add trauma-informed Yoga and meditation to create a holistic workshop intended to help people channel their emotions. This work is based on a number of evidence-based psychological treatments including Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Somatic models, Mindfullness-Based Stress Reduction, bilateral stimulation, internal resource building, and the compassion built into trauma treatments. We combine this with the ancient wisdom that has been passed down by so many of our ancestors. We use both trauma-informed Yoga and Yoga Nidra. The dances we have chosen are all based on cultures that have suffered oppression and have used music and dance to find resilience. We use Bomba, a folkloric dance from Puerto Rico, and Hip Hop from the United States Latin America, and Africa. We also use a number of Latin American dances, including Merengue, Bachata, and Salsa. The music and choreography are selected very carefully in order to give participants an opportunity to feel and express emotions. Healing Movement Mental Health began at the beginning of 2022. We not only provide therapeutic movement workshops, but we also offer retreats, In-person Healing Movement Workshops, and virtual one-on-one talk therapy and coaching.
