Watermelons are iconic images of summer’s bounty. Between the brilliantly colored flesh, the contrast with the rind, and the gorgeous pattern of the exterior skin, watermelons offer artists a goldmine of inspiration. In today’s class, we’ll paint three separate images influenced by this beautiful summer fruit. Each illustration focuses on the unique shapes associated with the presentation of this summer fruit.
The first image is a whole watermelon, with blossoms, stems, and leaves. The striations and markings offer an opportunity to work on creating a 3D effect. The second image is a cross-section of the fruit sliced in half to show its bold colors and textures. The third image depicts wedges and their classic shape. Here’s where artists can work on creating layers of translucency and shadows in the pulp.
You can download the class template and class supply list to assist in your sketch, and then further modify with your choice of colors and shapes it to create a painting all your own. Follow along building up layers and creating contrast, to achieve a realistic, yet painterly image. Create your own watermelon illustration using basic watercolor supplies. Either use the templates as they are, or combine them to create a new image. Trace the sketch, using a pencil, select your colors, and enjoy painting summer’s bounty.
