This course is designed for those who want to make a deeper, somatic impact on their clients. It introduces the Polyvagal Theory – a new way of understanding the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). A functioning ANS is imperative for both physical health and psychological well-being. After providing a review of the nervous system, a historical view of the ANS (Sympathetic, Parasympathetic) is compared and contrasted with the new understanding provided by Dr. Stephen Porges’s Polyvagal Theory (Ventral Vagal, Sympathetic, Dorsal Vagal).
Polyvagal Theory provides a new lens through which practitioners can view their clients. A Recalibration Practice is taught that stimulates Ventral Vagal activation, resetting the ANS and returning the body to balance. How to assess a client’s current state and use the Recalibration Practice is demonstrated, providing the key to moving clients from embodied resistance (fight, flight, or freeze) into a state of flow making the massage work more impactful.
