Okay, now that we've gone over lesson one, let's start on lesson number two. Today we're going to be talking about the vocabulary that we use for graphs. In the IELTS Writing exam, part one, what sort of vocabulary do we need? Let's not get too complicated. Let's keep this rather simple. There is no need for very complicated type of language to be used at all.
In fact, the more you try to use really complicated language, the more possibility you will have of messing that up. So it's better to keep it simple. Okay, I s kiss, keep it simple. So, there are only three things that a graph actually does. So the vocabulary we need to describe what a graph is doing is noise. A lot.
They go up, they go down or they stay inside. That's all they do. Graphs never do. Anything else shouldn't go off, go down or stay the same. That's it. That's what they do.
So However, if we say only that it shows the examiner we're unable to describe well. So let's look at ways to say it better, that go up, go down and stay the same. There are better ways to say it. But remember, we don't need to use a lot of complicated vocab. Let's have a look at what we can use say about graphs. gov.
After this, you should pause the video and write on a piece of paper as many words or expressions as you can think of that mean the same as going up or getting greater. When you've done that hit play, and let's see if we think in the same manner. Of course, one way to find a number of expressions for this is to look at a thesaurus. If you have word, you can have a look at the top of the word program, where it's got a review, if you click that, you will see the source. Click on versus the source. type the word like going up in the box, you will see a number of alternatives we could use.
So pause the video. Write down as many words as you can think of that mean getting Greater will going up. Now that you've done that, let's have a look. Here is something that I thought of until did you think of similar expressions as sin climb increase rise, search grow yet higher escalate advance swell develop spread expand wow that's quite a lot teach of that so many Wow, you're right. That's a lot. That's a lot But the sacred Jeez, we need only a few of them.
We don't need to know all of these, what we really need to do is pick a couple that we're happy to use. Because remember, we're writing 160 words, we're only going to get the opportunity to use one or two of these words. The examiner will never know. We don't know plenty of others. So don't panic about that. Just choose one or two that you like and feel that you could use.
Now, si only contains 160 words. So if you know about three words dealing with going up, it's enough. The examiner read your work only once. He has no idea that maybe you don't know any other words that need go up. So, Stop panicking. Choose the words that suit you once that you like, once you will feel comfortable using and use the choose three or maybe four maximum that you think you would be comfortable to use to describe going up.
And let's start building our vocabulary on these. So let's move on and start building our vocabulary. We're going to be really good writers because our vocabulary was not being good, was not being extensive, is still going to be very powerful. If you don't already have a notebook for your vocabulary now would be a good time to get one. So Rule a page of your notebook into four columns and put these headings now present the possible future. Let's now start adding the words you have chosen and filling in the gaps so you will know how to use these words in all tenses and how to use them now.
I will put five words in here now. But of course, you might choose different ones. Use a dictionary to find the details that you need. got here. I started with the present verb ascend. And I said okay, the noun is ascension.
Past verb is a sin. Future verb Wheeler said. You can have a look at it and you can see how I have done that Not always will you have something to put in a gap. However, if you do things like this, your vocabulary will grow at an amazing rate. Even though you have only chosen a few words to concentrate on. Now that we've done that exercise with go up, we need to do the same exercise for go down.
And then we have to do the same exercise for staying the same. Remember graphs only do three things go up or down, or stay the same. See how your vocabulary is growing so quickly? Oh, yes, I told you, I would show you some tricks. These are some of them. So next lesson.
Willard, quantify and qualify words the ones we now know to show some really sophisticated English but until then, I will say bye and see you in the next lesson. Well done
