About the Class

An airfoil is a two-dimensional cross-section of a wing. Before we can dive into the aerodynamics of a full wing, we must learn the basics of airfoil aerodynamics. In this course, we look at various strategies for predicting the forces and moments produced by airfoils based on their geometry.

Key Concepts Include:

  • Airfoil Geometry
  • NACA Airfoils
  • Thin Airfoil Theory
  • The Vortex Panel Method
  • Panel Methods with Viscous Corrections
  • Trailing-Edge Flaps
  • Camber-Line Design

We carefully cover the basics of airfoil analysis in enough detail so you can write your own analysis codes if you wish. You can speed up or slow down the videos to match your pace. Before you take this course, you should have a solid understanding of the principles covered in the Fundamentals of Aerodynamics course.

This Course Includes:

  • 23 Lessons
  • 5.5 hours of detailed instruction
  • 72+ page handbook
  • Workbook with 21 Practice Exercises
  • Exercise Solutions Manual
  • Sample Python Code for NACA 4-Digit Series Airfoils

At the completion of this course, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of airfoil analysis and the tools to begin analyzing and designing your own airfoils. Airfoil analysis and design are fascinating and exciting. Once you master these principles, you’ll never look at an aircraft the same. So let’s get started.

Aerospace Engineer and Teacher
Hi - I'm Doug. I love airplanes and math. Why are my courses so cheap? I believe higher education should be available to those of all economic circumstances and geographic locations.  My pre-recorded classes grew out of the pandemic that forced higher education to go online. I wanted to extend my reach to students who don't have the opportunity...

Conquer the Math of Flight
Through our study of aircraft design, we have grown to love the beautiful mathematics behind aerodynamics and flight mechanics. These analytical solutions grew out of intense work by aerodynamicists that were well versed in physical laws and mathematical principles. With the development of the computer in the 1960’s and subsequent improvements...
