In this video, we're going to learn about the key tools here in OneNote that are available in the ribbon. Now, if you've used any Microsoft Office software before, you'll probably know that a lot of the work that we're going to do is reliant on understanding what's inside the ribbon. And a lot of it is very straightforward if you've used another office tool, so you under home, you're going to have things like you know, your copy and paste your font choices, bold, italics, very, very basic and very common things. Now, something to keep in mind with styles. If you're familiar with styles in Word, you can access your styles here, but you can't actually create new styles in OneNote out of the box, there's no way to do that. Now, there are some workarounds to that.

And we'll look at that later on in this class, but out of the box, there's no way to actually add a new style here. You also have your different tags that you can throw in there. And essentially, what this is going to do is just going to add in whatever sort of tag you want there, you can see that there. Under insert, some of the key tools that you'll need to know about in here has to do with attachments. So you can add in an attachment, or a print out. Now, as you can probably guess, just like a lot of the other office programs, you can actually just drag and drop into OneNote.

So we'll look at that later on in this class. That's actually my preferred method is just to drag and drop. But if you need to, you can use the buttons here, add in a spreadsheet if you want it to do that. Something I want to point out is this recording right here audio and video. And of course, that requires that your computer has a microphone or webcam or something like that in order to record. But I found it's really, really helpful because what you can do is you can actually I record and then OneNote will keep track of what you're typing as you're recording.

So let's take a look at this really, really quickly here. So let's say I'm going to start recording, I'm going to record audio, you can see it starting to record. And then this is really helpful, say if you're taking notes in a meeting or at school, because now I can just start to add bullet points, come over here, and just start adding some bullet points. Remember this, this was a great point, what whatever sort of bullet points you want as things are being said, and then in your recording, if we stop this, and then I can actually come and play this back to see what is being said when so see this little plus right here, or this little plate right here. So if I play back right here, you'll notice it's going to jump watch this time right here. It's going to jump to that point in time, so jumps to 11 seconds in.

So I was 11 seconds into the recording when I started typing this. So it's really, really quiet encourage you to play around with that I found it really helpful when taking notes in a meeting, because I don't have to capture everything. Instead, I can tell OneNote to actually start recording, and then just take bullet points. And again, just bullet points or just something for to remind me later on, oh, this is something I need to do, or this is an action item I need to do or take back to my team or whatever that may be. And then later on, I can just play this back and listen to exactly what was being said at that point. Really, really cool stuff.

All right, so moving right along to the next section in the ribbon here we had insert let's move into draw. This is really helpful if you especially if you have a tablet like the Microsoft Surface, you can annotate your notes. So if you want to draw on something you can Do that you can highlight various aspects, you can highlight your text, some pretty cool stuff, you have some various shapes that you have in here, if you want to just draw in some basic shapes. Again, this is this way because I use the highlighter, so I can adjust this. Oops, there we go, in order to get different shapes, and colors, and whatever we want, as we're actually taking notes, again, it's really helpful I found, especially if you have a tablet, which I don't have on this computer. So that's why my drawings don't look very good.

Moving along, we have history. And the key thing that I really want to point out in history here is this Recycle Bin. So think of this just like the recycle bin on your computer, where anything that you delete is going to go into here, and then you can either come in and you can open it up in order to restore something. So these are things That would be in the recycle bin. Let me actually come in. And let's just take this page.

And let's see this in action here, I need to go to draw, go back to type, and deleted page. So let me delete that. And then right click Delete. And now if I come into my Recycle Bin, you can see this is that deleted page. So I can either come in and restore this by right clicking going to move a copy and bringing it back to whatever section I wanted to move it too. Or if I wanted to actually come in and get rid of everything, I can just empty the recycle bin.

And again, it's just like your computer's Recycle Bin. It's just a place where you can restore things if you wanted to. But again, things are actually permanently deleted after 60 days. So that's something to keep in mind when you're working inside of OneNote Moving right along the next tab in our ribbon is review. And in here, the key things that you'll probably use the most is going to be spelling. Again, just it's spellcheck, essentially, just like in Word, I really don't have anything in here.

So yeah, there's, there's really no spelling errors or anything like that. I'm good. And these are the things I typed in here, you have research, which essentially what research is going to do is it's going to search the web directly inside of OneNote. So let's say I wanted to search, remember, search this word, do have it highlighted, and then select research. And you can see, I can actually search for this word either in Bing, or in you know, translation to source or any of these other things. And you can actually come into your options and add in more more things if you wanted to do that.

But that's basically what reasons Search just allows you to actually search inside of one note directly. And similar for the thesaurus, again, it's very similar concept, it's just going to pull this over. I found this really helpful when I'm writing the thesaurus. That is where I'm trying to think of another way to phrase something. And I can just select that word and just come up and find, maybe reminisce instead of remember, right, it's another way of saying a very similar thing. And I can kind of go down this rabbit hole a little bit in order to find some things.

Again, it's all just helpful stuff that now that you know, it's there, you can start to figure out in your head, what you're going to use these things for in your own work. The final tab in the ribbon here is view. And far and away. The most popular thing that I do in this tab is to open up a new window. So what that's going to do, it's going to open A new OneNote window exactly like this. And this is really helpful because now I can come in.

And let's say I want this over here. And I'm over here, say this is my, this is my all my research, right? So this is all my research. And then I'll create a section for writing. And I use OneNote a lot for writing. So this would be kind of how I would use it.

So I kind of size these over. Let me squish these down a little bit so it's easier to see. And then you can have all your research on one side, and then all of the writing over there and you can just go back and forth. And then you can open up whatever page that you want. And then over here, you have everything. It's really, really helpful.

You can have as many windows as you want open and come in here and you can just start adding new Windows as you want to. But that's really helpful and just kind of one of the ways that I like to use OneNote is to open up new windows. You also have the ability to dock a window. So essentially what this is going to do is it's going to take one note in You can hit this, it'll automatically push it over to the side, I'm not going to do it in this video, because that will push it over to the side of my monitor. And that will make it not visible in the recording area. But what it's going to do is when you the idea is that when you're browsing the web, you have this docked OneNote window to take notes as you're browsing.

And then as you take notes, the browser will send back to OneNote, what website you're on, and it will automatically add links to those. So you can kind of take notes similar to the audio where it's going to jump back and forth in the audio, except it's going to add a link back to you when you type out this note. This is the website you were on. So you can refer back to that as you need to. Now personally in my workflow, I don't use a lot of dock windows because I like to add things manually if I do want to link something in out. I want to actually do that manually myself and we can look at how we'll capture things later on.

But if you need to do that you can quick note this is just Exactly what it looks like. It's a little post it note, essentially. And that's this here. And basically, we can see how this works. And this is helpful for throughout the day, I'll just leave this open and there's a little thing somebody walks in and need something, I just have this essentially again, it's just like a post it note, a virtual posting on my computer. And now I can actually actually open this up if I go to my normal view.

And it turned out to be really huge, again, outside the things so I just size this in, and we can see where this was sent. So this was sent to a notebook here, the quick notes notebook. And in my quick notes section, and over here, this is the default notebook that starts with OneNote. So that's kind of where it's stored there. And then from here, I can move this to wherever I want to. So I can move this into my regular notebook if I want to move it in there.

And then switch back. And you can see, there it is right there. So, again, you kind of get an idea of how all of this works together and how all of these different things work together here inside of OneNote to get an idea of how you might use it best. Now, the very last thing I wanted to point out over here in view is always on top. And this is really helpful, because it's going to keep it on top of whatever your you have. So let's say I have my browser over here, you notice I'm clicking over here.

And there's more to this window over here. But it's keeping this one on top. And again, this is just helpful. I found when I'm browsing the web or something like that one, I'll make sure that it's always on top. As I'm taking notes. You can turn that on and off right here.

Alright, so in this video, I know we covered a ton. We got a look at some of the key features in the ribbon here inside of OneNote. I encourage you to go back and start playing around with some of these to get more familiar with what some of the key features are and which ones you think you're going to be using in your day to day workflow. For now, let's move on to our next video where we'll take a look at how we can navigate around one notes interface and features a little bit better.
