In this course, we are going to learn the absolute basics of ear-training, pitch recognition, as well as how to finds chords and melodies. We will be discussing how to recognize and name groups of notes on the piano by using "relative pitch" as well as the basic concepts behind harmony, tonality, and musical keys.
Each class will have the same format:
What makes this class somewhat unique is that we will start at the absolute beginning, and once you understand the concepts of higher and lower sounds, we then explore very simple pitch recognition (note naming) quizzes and tutorials. This is the perfect course for someone who wants to learn how to play by ear but feels overwhelmed by the fast pace of many "play music by ear" courses.
As you progress through these videos there will be certain project goals to meet:
The first goal will be to get used to singing while listening to notes on the piano. Initially, you need only to feel and hear the difference between a low and high pitch. In later classes note names will be assigned to the pitches and we will listen, sing and name sequences of notes. As we progress the concepts of major and minor, and chord progressions will be introduced.
Each class has the same structure. I first introduce the goal of the class, then through the tutorial section, gives different strategies for achieving this goal. We then do an ear training quiz to confirm if we have learned the class goal. I have attached the answers to each quiz.
You will need some chordal instruments; piano, midi piano, keyboard, guitar, etc.
