Hi, everyone, and welcome back to the flat vector character class. In this lesson, we're going to learn how to create different color schemes for our characters. Okay, now that we have our basic three different character types, the next thing we want to think about is how to customize them in order to create a wide variety of characters to use for your projects. So let's look at some different color schemes that we can use. So taking our original color scheme, we can select all of the boxes here, copy them, and then pasting them. To create a duplicate.
We can now use these duplicate squares to create a different color scheme for characters. So let's go ahead and zoom in here so we can see our squares a little bit more clearly. So starting with the first color, which will act as the basis Or the base skin tone for color, we can select the square, double click on the color box here and select another color. So you can either select a different type of color here or if you already know what sorts of color you want to go for, you can input the number here with input the code here like so. And then choosing a darker shade of that color as you move along as we did previously, so select all of these colors here. Let's use the eyedropper tool to select that color.
And now let's select a darker shade like so. And then select the next three and select a darker shade. Continuously going darker, so the last to double click on the color square and choose the final color and for the final square wants to use As our highlights request, let's highlight. Let's use the eyedropper tool to to use the original color here. And now let's select a lighter color. And this will be our highlight for the character.
Same thing as what we use for our chest here, and the thigh edge as a little bit of shyness to the skin. Excellent. Now we want to apply these new colors to the new set of characters. So let's zoom out here. And we want to select all of our characters here like so, making sure we select all of the shapes. We're going to press Ctrl C to copy these characters.
And now Ctrl V to paste them. And what we're going to do now is going to use our new color scheme, or these characters. So let's bring this color scheme up. We're going to zoom in on one of our characters. And now all we have to do We use the Direct Selection tool to select the shapes of the character that we want colored. So just using a combination of this direct selection tool, and the eyedropper tool to apply the new color schemes to our characters.
Let's do this for our medium sized character first, using this as an example. So first, I'm going to select the head. And then use the eyedropper tool to select the new skin type, then new skin tone, like so. And you can you can also use the Direct Selection tool to select multiple shapes by holding shift on the keyboard. So let's hold shift on the keyboard to select all of the shapes that we want colored in. So just we just want to select the shapes which have the same color at the moment.
So that includes all these fingers here. Also the neck here as well. So once you've selected all of the same colors, use the eyedropper tool to select the skin color that you want, like so. Now, the reason why I didn't select the arms just because the arms is actually a, a stroke. So let's go ahead and select the arms here we can actually convert these arms into a shape. So let's select those arms here.
Go to object, expand, and then select both Fill and Stroke like so and it will actually turn these arms these strokes into a shape. And now if we use the eyedropper tool, I can now select the color that we want like so. Excellent. Now another way of doing that is if we want to if we still want to have the arms a stroke just so that we can easily edit the the shape of our arms by you directions or the Direct Selection tool and just moving the anchor points like so, all we have to do from here is select the arms, use the eyedropper tool, select the color that we want, change the fill back into a stroke like so. And then using the stroke options here, we can change the weight back to the number that we wanted. So I think it was something like 35 and then selecting the arms again, we can then use the stroke options here to make sure that the stroke is now rounded as a round cap, like so.
Excellent. Now let's go ahead and change the colors for the rest of the body. So here we want to make sure that we select all the shadow colors. So that's selected Shadow for our heads or on our neck here, the shadow under our chest, the thumbs, and also the legs here. So all these objects use the same color, and we want to go down a shade. So let's select the next shape down like so, using the eyedropper tool.
Now you'll see that all of these shapes have changed color. Excellent. And now we want to do the same for the feet. So let's use the Direct Selection tool to select the feet holding Shift to select the other foot and then selecting the darker shade like so. And now we want to use the highlights. So let's select the highlights both highlights, press on the keyboard and then select the highlights.
Color. Excellent. Now, finally, be nipples, dislike these nipples here and select the darkest color using the eyedropper tool. Cool. So that's how you create a new color scheme for your characters and also how to apply them to existing characters that you've created. So that's it for this lesson.
In the next lesson, we'll go through the conclusion of what we learnt in the project. see you all there.
