Bits bytes and all the rest. We have seen how a bit is the smallest unit that is understood by a computer. When we combine bits however, we make up other units and this is important that we are able to convert between these different units as you may be asked to complete this in questions. Here we have a table which shows how different units are made up. A nibble is quite a new term introduced in GCSE and is made up by four bits. byte some more common and a made up by having eight bits together.
In GCSE we use random figures for the following terms and this is what you should use when you convert the exact amounts due to binary being in base two are shown in brackets. And there are now new terms for these exact meant you do not however need to know them for your GCSE 1000 bytes therefore is called a kilobyte. Once As in kilobytes is called a megabyte. 1000 megabytes is called a gigabyte. 1000 gigabytes is called a terabyte. Whilst the units do keep going after this, you will not need to know them for your GCSE.
In this example, we need to convert 2064 bytes into megabytes. Because we're going from bytes into megabytes, it means that there's going to be less megabytes and therefore this is a division question. This is a two stage question. We firstly need to go to kilobytes by dividing by 1000. And then we need to go from kilobytes to megabytes by dividing by 1000. So 2064 divided by 1000 equals 2.064 kilobytes and then 2.064 kilobytes divided by 1000 equals 0.002064 megabytes In this second example, we need to go from 1.6 megabytes into bits.
As we are going from megabytes into bits. This is a multiplication question. We need to do this in steps. Firstly, we need to go from megabytes to kilobytes by multiplying by 1000. We then need to go from kilobytes bytes by multiplying by 1000. And finally, we need to go from bytes to bits by multiplying by eight.
So our question becomes 1.6 multiplied by 1000, multiply by 1000, multiply by 1000, which gives us an answer of 12,800,000 bits. Here's an example for you to try. Convert 80,000 bits into kilobytes. Remember to pause the video whilst you're working out and the answer On the next slide in the question, as we are converting bits into kilobytes, it's going to be a division question. We first of all need to go from bits two bytes by dividing by eight. And we then need to go from bytes to kilobytes by dividing by 1000.
A question becomes 82,000 divided by eight divided by 1000. And the answer is 10.25 kilobytes
