Today’s class plumeria sketchbook page combines art, nature, and research to create a sketchbook page inspired by the tropical plumeria plant. Sketchbook pages allow the creator to focus on the subject while incorporating drawings and paintings, as well as facts and memories to create unique and intriguing artwork. Looking inside an artist’s sketchbook is like peeking into someone’s diary. We see inner thoughts, feelings, memories, sparks of interest, and the author’s values. Each sketchbook page is original to the artist who creates it and in today’s class, we will view techniques to make your page come alive and reflect your interests, as the creator.
The class will demonstrate a framework for this page, one that you, as the artist, can tailor to your style. There are two class downloads - each comprised of multiple pages, to guide you in your process. The class demonstration uses watercolors and permanent markers, but you can use the medium of your choice. For your class project, create a plumeria sketchbook page following the basic sketch template. Create illustrations of the plumeria bloom and then decide auxiliary images that fascinate you, all inspired by the plumeria. The class includes a slideshow of plumeria images, as well as a reference sheet for downloading.
Then, add text, in your own words, describing your experience, thoughts, feelings, memories, or curiosities with the tropical bloom. Add frames, pen strokes, doodles, to make the page your own.
