The contagious nature of diseases called for quarantines in the 13th Century. By 1543, three main forms of transmission of diseases were noted. The concept of Miasma, the emission of poisonous gases derived from swamps was noted by the 1700s. Protective gear was used to protect the physicians from the plague. In the 1800s simple hygiene was not yet practiced.
Several health care reformers from Edward Jenner to Simmelwise, Nightingale, and Ehrlich are mentioned for their work in disease prevention, in stopping the transmission, and in developing treatments.
