We are going to play our first solo. Some of you may be surprised that we are going to be playing in G major, that is the band or the backing track will play in G major while we use a C heart. Well, shouldn't the band playing C major then using a C harp to play in G major is known as second position or cross harp. The reason that we use second position is that all the notes that sound good in G major are easily accessible on a C harp. It's kind of like putting a cable on a guitar to make chords easily accessible in some keys. In the resource section, I've put a document that outlines which harmonica to use.
To play in which key also, which key, you should tell the band to play and depending on what harmonica you hold in your hand. You can play in other positions as well. But that's for a more advanced course. Now, let's look at the dirty little secret of second position. See you in the next lecture.
