These are the basics. My name is Eddie gray. And this is a song that I won my first remix contest with. The aim was to take an old traditional song in this case, it was an Argentinian one. And you were to modernize it. Here we go.
If you want to listen to the rest of that, you can go to my soundcloud.com slash Eddie gray. Alright, in terms of the basics, what are some very basic things you can do to maximize on your desktop and laptops performance? Well, the first thing you can do is you can start to bypass plugins and there's a great feature in logic where if you just click on the left hand side of the plug in and slide down, so you click and hold and slide down, you can bypass plugins right away, and this drastically reduces your CPU consumption. So that's one strategy. Of course, you can just get rid of them altogether, if you know you're not going to use them. The next strategy is to start freezing tracks.
So what does it mean when something freezes? Well, I'm going to close the inspector. And I'm going to drag out the track header. Now at this moment, we're not able to see the freeze function. And there are reasons for this. But for now, let's go ahead and open up the Configure track header.
So how you do that is you Ctrl click and you go to configure tracker. Here, underneath the hood, you can see the freeze function. So when I click on that, all of a sudden And I have a new icon, indicating that you can now use the freeze function. Well, if I click, you can see it turns green, it still isn't activated. It's not until I press play that it's actually going to work. But let me open up your mind to something.
Freeze files exist within the folder scheme right here, in fact, so when I freeze this logic is going to render an audio file and keep it on the sidelines so that it's not processing plugins in real time and MIDI in real time. So let's go ahead and bounce this and then we will review. Okay, now you can see that this track here has been rendered and when I play it back, it's perfect. So that's another way to save CPU power. Of course, you could also just render that file and bounce to audio. We'll get to that.
But I do want to point something out. Do you see track 34? There's various regions. So I've got this region here, this one, yours three, region number 456, and seven. Well Believe it or not, it's harder for logic or any da w for that matter, to process seven regions than it is to process one file. So what we're going to do is we're going to click the track itself, all of the individual regions will be selected, and we're going to hit Command J.
And you can see now that an entire region has been consolidated. So this is something that you want to do from time to time. Especially when you're working with a laptop, and limited resources. You know, a desktop can have 32 gigabytes of RAM 64 gigabytes of RAM, while laptops are limited in that respect, but if you do these small things, you'll notice your performance go up drastically. The next thing I highly recommend is that you do not use plugins unnecessarily. In most mixing circles, you'll find individuals will roll off the low end.
Well, if you find yourself doing this more often than not, or at least 80% of the time on 80% of your tracks, then you might as well just render a track before you actually start to treat it with other things. So do not just place a plug in for insignificant actions that you can just render right away if you know you're going to roll off at 200 100 every time you might as well just render right there. And then So we talked about balancing the audio. So let's do that. Now. Here is a verse synthesizer.
So I'm going to click that and I'm going to hit control B. You can also find that right up here in the toolbar, if you go to customize and that would be under bounce regions. And you can also go to File bounce and you would be doing regions in place for individual regions and then track and place in this case I want to do the whole track here we go. Okay, and there it is right there. On to the next feature, talked about bouncing to audio, we've talked about not using plugins unnecessarily well this next feature kind of does both of those things. This is called selection based processing.
And it actually takes place at all times in logic, and it's found on track 254 and 255, respectively. So this is its default setting every single time. So how do we bring this up? Well, it is a key command. So you can find that in the key command window. But it's probably better found right here in the function menu under selection based processing.
So what does this do? This allows you to process in real time. One of the things that I like to do is I like to use isotope Mobius filter to create a sense that the drums are going up. So let me find a spot for this. So I'm going to go ahead and make my edit so that when we get to this part, I'll go ahead and solo that selection based processing is going to process it. And it's going to do so as an isolated event.
In other words, I don't have to put this plug in inside of here. In order to make this render, it's going to happen in real time. So again, I'm going to click here, you can preview if you want to, I'm just going to go right into it, hit Apply. You'll notice that the region is now blue. That's a let's hear what that sounds like. Something I do a lot.
Finally, once we get to the point where the song is mostly done, you feel like you've made all the choices that you could make At this point, and you want to relieve your CPU pressure, relieve the computer of its duties, you want to go to File, bounce and replace all tracks. And what that's going to do, it's going to render all of these files so that all the MIDI tracks turned into audio all the audio tracks turns audio, but you have no more processing on any of the channels. So consider it a fresh start. From here, you can actually finish the mixing process you can finish the mastering process. Now before you go, open up your preferences under logic, preferences and go to display. And I want you guys to turn off these last three values and that also will help you maximize your desktop and laptops performance.
Thank you for watching.
