The Third Section dwells on the Explanation of the five basic skills.
In this section, the prospective teacher of phonics is guided through the steps and procedures involved in impacting these basic skills in his or her pupils/students. Each of the five basic skills is treated in detail, where the course participant is painstakingly taken through the details of how these skills are impacted.
The first skill (Learning the letter sounds)
Here, course participants are taught among others:
How the sounds should be introduced.
The number of sounds to be introduced to learners within specific periods of time.
Activities involved in introducing the sounds both by the teacher and the learner.
The second skill (Learning letter formation)
In this section, participants are tutored on the processes and procedures involved in impacting this important skill in their pupil(s)/student(s). These include among others, treating of:
Pre-writing activities.
Pencil-holding-skills.
Actual writing on paper.
The third skill (Blending)
At this stage, participants will learn how to successfully introduce their pupils to the art of reading. This involves among others:
Stages and levels of spelling (Blending)
Stages and levels of Reading.
Treatment of Alternate sounds.
The fourth skill (Phonological Awareness)
Participants will be tutored on how to develop and nurture this skill in their pupils/students. This will go a long way in developing confidence and self-dependence in pupils/students. With this skill, pupils will be able to write dictated words and sentences easily, independent of their teacher's help.
The course also offers a series of sound came which further enhance and fortify the pupils in both the acquisition and utilization of the skill.
The fifth skill (Spelling the tricky words)
This skill empowers learners to be able to handle difficult words that sometimes defy the logic of blending. This is like the icing on the cake of the course.
Course Assessment: Each participant or trainee is expected to take assessment tests of the knowledge and skills gained in the course. This leads to the award of a Certificate of completion.
