Lesson three, why it matters. So why does it matter? Well, as a team leader, you cannot afford to ignore these powerful forces, these powerful influences on the behavior of your team. So here's a few facts for you. fact, one, you are influencing your team right now, whether you like it or not. So all that research I've discussed, shows us that we can't help but influence the culture, particularly as a leader or manager.
Here's another fact. individuals in your team are influencing each other's behavior right now. It's happening right now. And through that influence, through those norms, those normal bits of behavior that are being created Through the interactions of your team, through your influence. That team is creating a culture right now. A culture is always being created, adjusted, edited, changed, is a dynamic process.
So that is happening in your team right now. So your team take their cue from you about what's important, what's most important, what's not that important? individuals are creating the culture through every individual decision, with every choice they make with what they do with what they continue to do, what they don't do. individuals in your team are influencing each other's behavior right now. By watching each other and observing what's done. What's ignored.
What's rewarded or punished? what's expected? What becomes normal? So this process of culture creation is happening, whether you pay attention to it or not, it's happening. So how can you shape your culture? Don't forget, you're already doing this whether you know it or not.
So firstly, being awake to what you pay attention to what you actively reward as a manager and leader. What you ignore what you punish processes you manage the vision for your team. So what you're doing, you're leveraging this tendency for people to be influenced by you and influenced by each other to influence behavior and create a specific culture. So rather than just leaving it to chance, rather than just allow your culture to evolve and develop, according to whatever individuals might do on a whim, what you're trying to do is you're trying to take control and have some major influence on the culture that you create.
