Shows an example of the five why analysis. There were two buildings that were constructed at the same time. The construction material used was off the same quality. It was procured from the same vendor. The buildings were constructed by the same company. Even if everything was the same, one of the buildings had to be painted every two to three years.
It looked dull compared to the other building. No one knew the root cause for this. Soon, it became a concern for the home owners of the day. They began to discuss the issue. The building administrator called for a meeting of the homeowners who stayed in that building. The staff who helped maintain the building, were also invited to the discussion.
The administrator was well versed in using the five why analysis. As the meeting began, he began asking the first why question. Why does our building have to be pre colored after every two to three years? Because our building starts looking done within that period of time. Then he asked the second why question. Why does our buildings start looking within span of three years because we see pieces of birds, especially pigeons on our building.
We were possibly heading to a root cause which could have never been taught. Then he asked the third why question Why does our building have more pieces of birds? Then the other building? Because the flock together on our building compared to the other building? Then he asked the fourth, why question Why do these birds flock on our building and cannot flock so much on the other? Because these birds peed on the insects that up here on are the And then he asked the fifth why question, which revealed the fuel root cause.
Why are there more insects appearing on our building than the other building because we switch on the building lights at 5pm which is earlier than the other building. The lights for the other building are switched on when it starts getting darker. So, thanks because we switch on the lights at an earlier time. The insects get attracted to the lights of our building. This, in turn, attracts the birds when birds flock to eat insects they For our thesis on the building that finally leads to the appearance of the building compared to the other building. As the resulting action, the building administrator stopped switching on the lights at 5pm each day, they only switched on the lights as it started becoming darker in the evening because they acted on the root cause they do not have the problem anymore.
This identification of the root cause was done effectively, only because of the five by analysis.
